The Emotional Debra Morgan Connection Behind Harrison’s New Season 2 Role, Teased by Dexter: Resurrection Star

During the recent Dexter: Resurrection FYC event, Jack Alcott spoke about keeping Deb’s legacy alive through Harrison’s character.

Even though Dexter: Resurrection is still in its early weeks of production in New York City, several set photos shared by a renowned NYC photographer already gave fans an early glimpse at Harrison Morgan’s new career path in the upcoming season.

After working as a bellhop at a well-known New York hotel in the first season, Harrison is definitely taking a major step forward this time around. The creative team behind the show has now placed Dexter’s son inside a New York City Police Homicide Department, which is a direction that actually seems to confirm a noticeable time jump in the story.

In Season 1, Harrison’s interest in becoming a cop was in a very early stage, something that made this new position an enormous development for the character. Unsurprisingly, this creative choice immediately made many fans out there think about Debra Morgan and Harry Morgan, with Harrison’s new role giving the impression of a deliberate way to mirror (and honor) both of them.

During the Dexter: Resurrection For Your Consideration Q&A event on May 14, moderator Liam Crowley asked Jack Alcott about Harrison joining the police force in Season 2 and whether this could be seen as a way of... keeping Debra’s legacy alive in the sequel series.

Jack Alcott responded honestly that he had not previously thought about that interpretation, but agreed that it could very well be part of the reasoning.

He explained that in conversations with Michael C. Hall, he was actually encouraged to think about character decisions as something that can hold many truths at once, rahter than a single and fixed motivation. That idea, he said, fits Harrison especially well, since the character continues to balance conflicting instincts and emotions.

Alcott also expanded on how this duality is what makes both the show and Harrison compelling. He described Dexter as someone driven by a darker, instinctual side, but still deeply human, capable of love and connection, specifically in his role as a father.

From that perspective, he acknowledged that Harrison’s path into law enforcement could indeed be seen as a way for the writers, and perhaps the character himself, to continue the emotional legacy tied to Debra Morgan. He actually leaned toward the idea that this meaning makes sense within the story’s creative direction.

For a show like Dexter, honoring characters from the past is nothing new, and (especially) longtime fans have always enjoyed spotting those parallels. Harrison, in particular, has already been used twice as a way to pay tribute to characters who are no longer here with us.

First, his hotel job mirrored Rita Morgan’s work at the hotel during the original series, and now his role in homicide appears to reflect both Debra and Harry Morgan’s influence.

While the chances of seeing Jennifer Carpenter return as Debra Morgan in future seasons still seem slim, it’s worth noting that she chose to step away from the role after Dexter: New Blood. Even so, it’s actually nice to see Deb’s legacy carried forward in different ways throughout the series.
