One year after the cancellation of the Dexter prequel series, Paramount+ head of originals Jane Wiseman was asked about the decision in a new interview.
Believe it or not, it has been a year since Dexter: Original Sin, the prequel series about Dexter Morgan’s early years and his transformation from a student into an avenging serial killer, was cancelled.
The decision came seemingly out of nowhere and left fans, as well as people involved with the show, shocked and, of course, disappointed. Ever since the cancellation, Paramount+ has largely remained silent about the decision, despite the strong reaction from fans.
But now, one year later, we finally have a better explanation for why the Dexter prequel was axed.
Paramount+ Explains Why Dexter: Original Sin Was Cancelled
In a new and extensive interview with Deadline, Paramount+ Head of Originals Jane Wiseman directly addressed the fate of the series. Wiseman took on her current role on August 13, 2025, actually serving as the company's top programming exectuive under Cindy Holland (who is streaming chief) to oversee development and production for big projects.
When asked why Paramount+ decided not to move forward with Dexter: Original Sin Season 2, which had already been announced before the Paramount-Skydance merger, Wiseman explained that the decision was made "right in the beginning" of her tenure.
"I know it was really deliberate, we wanted to focus on Michael C. Hall and his character with Dexter: Resurrection, and that was really important for us to continue that storyline."
Her answer makes things behind the sudden cancellation much clearer, putting an end to a year of theories and speculation.
Dexter: Resurrection Actually Was the Deciding Factor
Following the arrival of the new leadership team at Paramount+, it took only nine days for Dexter: Original Sin to be cancelled. And, as Wiseman explained, the decision appears to have been very deliberate.
At the center of it was Dexter: Resurrection and, more importantly, Michael C. Hall's return as Dexter Morgan.
From the perspective of Paramount+'s new leadership, there was already a present-day Dexter storyline in motion, with Hall back in the role fans have known for more than two decades. Rather than continue telling Dexter's early story in Original Sin with Patrick Gibson, the new leadership chose to focus its attention and resources on the ongoing story of the original Dexter.
In other words, Dexter: Resurrection already existed, and that ultimately made Original Sin much less of a priority for the new Paramount+ team.
The cancellation had been announced on August 22, 2025, and as it always happens with those kinds of things, it was far from well received. Petitions asking Paramount+ to reverse the decision quickly followed, with the biggest one reaching 100,000 signatures in a very short amount of time, but sadly nothing changed.
Is There Still Hope for Dexter: Original Sin?
Unfortunately, even though the interview with Wiseman was extensive, Deadline did not ask her whether there could be any hope for Dexter: Original Sin to return sometime in the future, perhaps after Dexter: Resurrection eventually comes to an end.
For now, however, Wiseman's comments actually make the situation clear.
So... despite the recent rumors and the continued demand from fans, it appears that Dexter: Original Sin is a story Paramount+ has decided to leave behind, at least for the time being.
