The fan campaign to save Dexter: Original Sin continues to grow stronger.
August 22 was a heartbreaking day for Dexter fans, the cast, and the crew of Dexter: Original Sin, as shocking news broke: the prequel series will not be moving forward with a second season. This announcement came despite the fact that Showtime and Paramount+ had previously renewed the show on April Fools’ Day.
What makes this even more confusing is that Dexter: Original Sin Season 2 was never officially promoted on Paramount+ or Showtime’s social media channels, yet plans for another season were very real. The writers’ room was set to begin work soon after the renewal—but those plans have now been scrapped.
Why Was Dexter: Original Sin Cancelled?
The cancellation comes at a time of major change for Paramount+. Over the past several months, the streaming platform was in talks to be sold, with Skydance emerging as the leading buyer. After months of negotiations, the merger was finalized. And as often happens with such corporate shakeups, executives who supported certain projects were replaced, and new leadership made very different decisions.
Unfortunately, one of the executives to exit was Chris McCarthy, who strongly supported building franchises through prequels. With new leadership at the helm, that strategy was abandoned—and Dexter: Original Sin became the first casualty.
In other words, the prequel wasn’t canceled due to low ratings or lack of fan interest. It was canceled because of corporate restructuring and a focus on prioritizing Dexter: Resurrection Season 2, starring Michael C. Hall.
Fan Outrage and Petitions to Save the Dexter Prequel
Since the cancellation news broke, Dexter fans worldwide have been voicing their outrage online. Multiple petitions have already been launched—including one by us here at Dexter Daily—calling for Paramount+ to reverse its decision and bring Dexter: Original Sin back for Season 2.
The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Thousands of fans are signing petitions, sharing posts, and using their voices to show that Dexter: Original Sin deserves a second chance. The passion of the fanbase proves that the prequel series was loved, and the Dexter franchise is still stronger than ever.
Could Dexter: Original Sin Find a New Streaming Home?
This is the question on every fan’s mind: if Paramount+ won’t move forward with the prequel, could Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, or another platform save it?
Unfortunately, the answer is no—at least for now. The reason is that showrunner Clyde Phillips has an overall deal with Paramount+, which means the entire Dexter franchise (including Dexter: Resurrection and Dexter: Original Sin) falls under the same corporate umbrella. Paramount+ cannot license one part of the franchise to another streaming service while keeping the rest exclusively in-house.
That means it’s Paramount+ or nothing.
What Fans Can Do Now
The fate of Dexter: Original Sin lies in Paramount+’s hands—but fan voices can make a difference. We’ve seen countless examples of cancelled shows being revived after strong fan campaigns (Lucifer, The Expanse, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and more). The same could happen here.
That’s why it’s crucial for fans to keep supporting petitions and spreading the word. Every signature, every share, and every post counts. Together, we can send a message to Paramount+ that Dexter: Original Sin deserves to live on.
