Christina Milian Gets Emotional Rewatching Dexter: Original Sin After Season 2 Cancellation: ‘I Miss My Family’

The singer and actress shared a few heartfelt thoughts about the Dexter prequel series earlier today.

Around this time last year, it was a genuinely special moment to be a Dexter fan. Dexter: Resurrection was beginning filming for the very first time, while new episodes of Dexter: Original Sin were dropping weekly actually giving the franchise fresh momentum. By this point in 2025, we had already watched episode five and were counting down to episode six. This year, however, the situation feels different.

Instead of gearing up for another season of Dexter: Original Sin, we are now living with the reality that the prequel series was axed back in August, despite having received a season two renewal just a few months earlier.

Even with visible efforts from fans and vocal support from several cast members, the new leadership at Paramount+ appears unwilling to reverse the decision. Since this same period last year was filled with new episodes, it is only natural that a sense of nostalgia has surfaced among the actors who were part of that journey.

The latest to express those feelings is Christina Milian, who portrayed a younger version of Maria LaGuerta in the series set in 1991 Miami. Earlier today, the actress and singer shared a few Instagram stories in which she tagged Dexter Daily, while on a long flight. As she scrolled through the in-flight entertainment system, she unexpectedly came across (and rewatched) Dexter: Original Sin, which was listed alongside the original Dexter series and Dexter: Resurrection. That moment actually struck a chord.

“A really nostalgic one and it’s very recent but it kind of makes me sad,” Milian said. “But I’m happy to see it’s still alive somehow. There’s Dexter: Original Sin. I miss my family. Guys, I miss my fam over there. I don’t know. I can’t explain it. I know we only had one season and we were, you know, thinking we were on to season two.”

Although Milian appeared in eight of the ten episodes, since LaGuerta joins Miami Metro slightly later in the timeline, she still formed strong connections with the cast. One of her closest bonds was with Alex Shimizu, who played a young Vince Masuka. During production, the two frequently shared behind-the-scenes videos of themselves dancing together, a small but also telling sign of the chemistry that developed on set.

Milian also reflected on the show’s momentum:

“We had such a really great dynamic by the time we were done with the show and by the time we had the big red carpet and the premiere,” she said. “It was a very successful launch, so we were excited to come back together. But hey, it’s the entertainment industry, and that’s how things work sometimes.”

Christina Milian is widely regarded as one of the strongest casting choices in Dexter: Original Sin, not just because of her star power, but because she actually felt perfectly suited for the role of Maria LaGuerta. She shares a striking resemblance with Lauren Vélez, who originated the character in the original series, a similarity that was further enhanced by studying the role, as well as  the makeup department’s subtle but effective work.

It is always nice and heartwarming to see actors speak so fondly about projects they were part of, especially when the experience was cut shorter than expected. There’s still hope among fans that Paramount+ may one day reconsider and allow the cast to return for a second season. The demand hasn’t faded, and the voices asking for Dexter: Original Sin to continue remain loud and clear.
