Dexter: New Blood’s Most Controversial Scene Needed Multiple Retakes — And the Reason Is Wild

The showrunner of Dexter has finally revealed something we never knew about that scene.

Dexter: Resurrection may now feel like a triumphant return to form for the franchise, but long before this new chapter took shape, it was Dexter: New Blood that quietly cleared the path for it to exist at all. The miniseries premiered in November 2021 and, while it earned solid praise, it also faced some missteps that complicated what was originally promoted as the definitive ending to Dexter Morgan’s story.

Beyond Dexter’s death at Harrison’s hands, there was another moment that received the most backlash, and it was the scene that sets the final act in motion: Dexter killing Sergeant Logan while trying to escape from the Iron Lake police department.

A recent interview with showrunner Clyde Phillips on The Dark Passengers: A Dexter Podcast revealed a surprising behind-the-scenes detail about that very sequence, which involved Dexter imprisoned and Logan, played by Alano Miller. Phillips explained that the team had to film the moment several times for an almost ironic reason:

"It never quite looked right."

He went on to clarify how the scene was meant to be read. As he described it, Logan draws his gun and reaches back, Dexter ducks and wraps an arm around him, and the struggle results in Logan’s neck breaking. When the interviewer suggested the recoil might have contributed, Phillips corrected him, emphasizing that it was really just Dexter dropping down with the full weight of a grown man.

What becomes clear (once again), especially with Phillips’ clarification, is that the scene was never intended to depict Dexter killing Logan on purpose. The writers conceived it as an accident, and a moment forced by circumstance, yet many interpreted it as a calculated decision that violated one of the most important rules of Harry’s Code.

That disconnect actually fueled the controversy, and hearing the showrunner admit that the moment “never looked right” gives the whole thing an ironic twist, almost as if the universe itself was hinting that this wasn’t the ideal way for Dexter to make his escape.

With Dexter: Resurrection being a thing, the context has actually shifted. For the new series to function with Dex alive and free, certain story allowances had to be made to justify how he escaped the consequences of killing Logan.

The explanation offered in Resurrection’s premiere was not... too convincing, but most fans have accepted it, mostly because New Blood was originally designed as the final chapter of Dexter Morgan’s life. Resurrection changes that trajectory entirely, and in doing so, it allows the saga to move forward, while forgiving hte rough edges of the finale that came before it.
