Uma Thurman Insists Her Dexter: Resurrection Character Has ‘Deep Integrity’ — Not Villainy

The Oscar-nominated actress explains why she views Charley Brown as a woman of deep integrity rather than a villain.

Every installment of the Dexter franchise has introduced many complex characters, and Dexter: Resurrection is no exception. Season 1 featured some intriguing new additions, but Charley Brown, played by Uma Thurman, was definitely one of the most fascinating.

Charley's introduction in the series premiere was iconic. From the very beginning, the writing gave audiences every reason to view her as a dangerous and untrustworthy person. Yet as the season continued, perceptions of Charley started to change. One episode would make her seem like a villain, while the next would reveal a softer side to her character.

However, the actress behind the role has a much more clear perspective. According to Uma Thurman, Charley Brown is not a villain.

In a recent interview with entertainment and awards-prediction website Gold Derby, Thurman discussed her role in Dexter: Resurrection. Despite the fact that one of Charley's responsibilities is recruiting notorious serial killers into Leon Prater's society, she explained that she does not view the character as a villain.

Those comments actually carry even more weight now that we have already seen glimpses from Thurman's appearances on the set of Dexter: Resurrection Season 2. Her perspective also supports many theories we've discussed here at Dexter Daily regarding Charley's future storyline and where her arc could really be heading.

Among other stuff, she also reflected on the big range of characters she has portrayed throughout her career, either heroes, villains, or ordinary people. She explained that she always tries to empathize with her characters and understand their POV.

In her view, even characters that audiences consider villains don't really see themselves that way. Thurman acknowledged that Charley has done difficult and morally questionable things, but she believes the character operates according to a strong personal code and actually possesses a deep sense of integrity.

She explained that Charley carries the weight of her personal struggles without really seeking... sympathy or understanding from anyone around her, which was one of the aspects of the role she really found most compelling.

Thurman added that she was immediately impressed by the scripts for Dexter: Resurrection Season 1, describing them as brilliantly constructed. Even so, she actually admitted that one question was stuck in her mind when she first received the offer. And that was whether the series truly needed her character.

Of course, that uncertainty disappeared after a long conversation with showrunner Clyde Phillips weeks before filming began. She recalled spending nearly two hours speaking with Phillips over Zoom and came away deeply impressed by his creativity and artistic vision. She described him as a serious artist and someone she wanted to collaborate with.

Later, she met Michael C. Hall, Scott Reynolds, Marcos Siega, and the rest of the creative team adding that the production had a welcoming and supportive atmosphere.

The fact that she joined an already famous television series, ended up being a special experience for Thurman. She explained that, unlike most film projects where a cast and crew are finding their way together, Dexter: Resurrection operated like a finely tuned machine. Thurman described the experience as something entirely new in her career and said she found it genuinely exciting.

According to her, Charley is actually used to being the smartest person in the room and staying one step ahead of everyone around her. That confidence is definitely challenged when she meets Dexter.

She noted that Charley at first had a hard time understanding Dex and misjudges him in a way she rarely does with other people. For a character who is typically an... excellent judge of character, that dynamic actually became another interesting aspect of the role to explore. And we cannot wait to see what's next for them!
