The legacy of Dexter's beloved sister lives on, and Michael C. Hall and Jack Alcott recently addressed who carries that torch forward.
For many fans, Debra Morgan's absence has been one of the biggest adjustments in Dexter: Resurrection. After serving as Dexter's conscience in all 10 episodes of Dexter: New Blood, Jennifer Carpenter's character has not returned in the new series, leaving a big void.
But according to Michael C. Hall and Jack Alcott, Dexter: Resurrection may have already found the perfect character to fill the role Debra once played in Dexter's life.
And that character is Harrison Morgan.
During a recent interview with Collider, both actors suggested that Harrison has actually evolved into Dexter's most important emotional connection, taking over many of the functions that once made Debra such a important part of the show.
For years, Debra was not only Dexter's sister, but his strongest link to humanity, and often the person who urged him to confront the consequences of his actions. Even after her death in the controversial original series finale, Debra continued to influence Dexter through her appearances in Dexter: New Blood.
Now, it appears Harrison is stepping into that space.
Jack Alcott explained that Debra played a huge role in Dexter's evolution throughout the OG series. Rather than remaining an emotionally detached killer, Dex gradually became a far more complicated and human character, and Debra actually was a significant reason why. Alcott believes Harrison now serves a similar purpose, helping keep Dexter grounded and connected to the people around him.
Michael C. Hall shared a similar perspective, saying that Dexter continues to see qualities in Harrison that remind him of Debra. According to Hall, Harrison reflects the humanity that Deb brought into Dexter's life, and Dexter's growing realization that his son may be more like his late sister than himself is an important development for the character.
That comparison becomes even more interesting when looking at Harrison's own personality.
While Harrison has proved many times that he is capable of violence, Alcott pointed out that his motivations are very different from Dexter's. Harrison is driven by empathy and a legit desire for justice, which makes him far less interested about himself than his father. That emotional openness and concern for others are things that many would immediately associate with Debra.
The parallels may become even stronger in the upcoming season.
With Dexter: Resurrection currently filming in New York City, recent set photos suggest Harrison is actually heading toward a career in law enforcement as an NYPD rookie. This would make him even more of a... spiritual successor to Debra, who dedicated her life to police work throughout all eight seasons of the original series.
Looking back, Debra's death remains one of the saddest and most controversial moments in the whole franchise. In the Dexter Season 8 finale, Dex made the heartbreaking decision to remove his sister from life support after complications from a gunshot wound left her brain-dead. His choice to later lay her to rest in the ocean frustrated fans for years, even though it sort of made sense.
Jennifer Carpenter's return in Dexter: New Blood actually helped give the character a more... meaningful farewell, but Dexter: Resurrection continues without Debra's physical presence. And, rather than replacing her outright, the series seems to be honoring her legacy through Harrison.
If the show's latest season is any indication, Harrison Morgan is becoming everything Debra once represented in Dexter's life. That is his moral compass, his strongest family bond, and the person most capable of bringing out his humanity.
And for a series that was built around the Morgans, honestly there may not be a better successor!
