Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 — The 5 Original Characters Most Likely to Return

With the first casting announcements just around the corner, let’s take a closer look at the original characters who could make a comeback.

With less than three weeks to go until Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 begins filming in New York City, anticipation continues to build. Casting announcements are expected soon, and of course, speculation about new additions is already happening.

What is interesting is that this production cycle actually feels much more quiet compared to the first season. Back then, casting rumors started circulating nearly two months before filming began. This time around, there is barely any buzz, but this silence hasn’t reduced fan excitement. In fact, it is sparking even more theories about which familiar faces might return.

After nearly two decades, Dexter has proven that no character is ever truly off the table. Whether alive or dead, the series has found many creative ways in the past to bring characters back, without it feeling like simple fan service. With that in mind, attention actually turns to characters from the OG series, many of whom are still alive and could realistically reappear.

Based on how Season 1 concluded, several legacy characters are in a strong position to return. Here are five from the original series (excluding Dexter and Harry who are already central to the story) who seem most likely to appear in Season 2.

1. Joey Quinn (Desmond Harrington)

Quinn definitely sits at the top of the list. Season 1, Episode 8 (“The Kill Room Where It Happens”) confirmed that Quinn is still with Miami Metro P.D., now serving as a lieutenant, which is a role once held by Maria LaGuerta, Debra Morgan, and Angel Batista.

His return is especially important given what he now knows. Through a phone call with NYPD Detective Claudette Wallace, Quinn learned that Batista had traveled to New York City and (unofficially) reopened the Bay Harbor Butcher case. Desmond Harrington appeared in two scenes during Season 1, but with Batista now confirmed dead, Quinn could actually have a much larger role moving forward.

2. Angel Batista (David Zayas)

Batista may be dead, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we have seen the last of him. Given how significant Batista was to the first season’s story, it is actually very possible David Zayas could return, but in a limited capacity.

Season 1 ends just hours after Batista is murdered by Leon Prater, and Season 2 could explore the aftermath. That might include scenes involving identification, a flashback, a funeral in Miami, or even a hallucination similar to how the show has revisited other deceased characters.

3. Vince Masuka (C.S. Lee)

Masuka is another strong candidate. Still part of Miami Metro, he appeared in Season 1 during a nightclub scene in Miami alongside Quinn and Batista. While Masuka largely retained his cringe personality, the events surrounding Batista’s death could definitely push the character in a more serious direction.

The two shared decades of history, both professionally and personally, and that kind of loss could in fact reshape Masuka’s role. A storyline focused on seeking answers (or even justice) would actually offer a different side of him that the show hasn’t explored before.

4. Jamie Batista (Aimee Garcia)

Jamie is another character who stands out as a likely return. Introduced in Season 6 as Harrison’s nanny, she had a relatively close relationship with both Harrison and Dexter. Now, with her big brother Angel gone, the emotional weight of that loss could definitely bring her back into the story.

If Season 2 takes time to explore the aftermath of Batista’s death, Jamie’s presence would actually make perfect sense. There is also an interesting real-world detail: a reunion between Aimee Garcia and executive producer Scott Reynolds last summer has people saying that her return may already be in the works.

5. Tom Matthews (Geoff Pierson)

Matthews rounds out the list. As Miami Metro’s former Captain and later Deputy Chief, Matthews has deep ties to both the department and the Morgan family. His decades-long friendship with Harry, has him in quite a unique position within the story. Even if he is no longer active at the department, his return could actually serve many purposes.

He could react to Batista’s death or, perhaps, finally address one of the series’ biggest fan questions, which is related to whether he knew about Dexter’s true nature. Geoff Pierson recently suggested that Matthews didn’t know, but the original series never gave a definitive answer. Season 2 could definitely settle that mystery.

One important detail you should remember is that aside from Batista, none of the characters mentioned above currently knows that Dexter Morgan is still alive.

Which of these characters do you think will actually return? Be sure to share your thoughts in the comments!
