This marks the first time Gellar has spoken about the prequel since its cancellation.
2025 turned out to be an awesome year for Dexter fans, with two separate series delivering brand-new episodes. While much of the spotlight fell on the impressive casting of Dexter: Resurrection, the prequel Dexter: Original Sin proved just as noteworthy.
When the cast for Dexter: Original Sin was first announced in the first half of 2024, it actually drew attention almost immediately, since a number of high-profile actors joined the series as regulars, including Sarah Michelle Gellar. Widely recognized for her iconic role as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gellar signed on for a 10-episode arc as Tanya Martin, Miami Metro’s Forensic Chief and Dexter’s superior.
However, like the rest of the cast, her journey with the series came to an abrupt end in August, when it was officially revealed that Dexter: Original Sin would not return for a second season. While many of her co-stars actually addressed the cancellation publicly, Gellar chose to remain quiet at the time, avoiding any mention of the show in interviews...until now.
In a recent video with People, Gellar looked back on various projects from her career through a photo album, and near the end, Dexter inevitably came up.
Although she did not directly comment on the show’s cancellation (something she’s experienced before many times with other projects) she actually spoke warmly about her time on set, especially her experience working alongside Christian Slater and Patrick Dempsey.
“Dexter, oh my god, the best. Huge fan of Dexter. Never thought I’d get a chance to play in that sandbox,” she said, reflecting on joining such a well-established franchise. She continued by sharing her excitement about working with Slater: “Then they tell me that it’s Christian Slater. Like, I mean my full childhood crush in Heathers. I recite to him all the time. Just a dream. I got to present him his star on the Walk of Fame. Like I’m part of his legacy now, which to me is so crazy.”
She also recalled a memorable, and also amusing moment from the set involving Patrick Dempsey: “I mean, also my other childhood crush. I remember one of the first days I was sitting in a car between the two of them and I was like, my high school self is literally combusting right now. Dempsey, who is known for taking himself seriously, let me play an epic prank on him and was such a great sport about it. And I love you for that, Dempsey.”
Even though Dexter: Original Sin did not last as long as everybody wanted, the cast, including Gellar, clearly look back on it fondly.
