Everything you need to know about the highly anticipated sequel to New Blood.
We’re now halfway through the first season of Dexter: Original Sin, and the Dexter franchise is taking another giant leap forward. The continuation of Dexter Morgan’s story after the events of Dexter: New Blood is officially happening, with Michael C. Hall returning to reprise his iconic role.
Fans could hardly have imagined this twist after the divisive New Blood finale, where Harrison killed Dexter in what seemed like the definitive end. Back in early 2022, speculation about a Harrison-centric spinoff starring Jack Alcott was rampant. Showrunner Clyde Phillips and director Marcos Siega had assured fans that Dexter was truly dead, with Hall never to reprise his role. However, things have taken a dramatic turn.
The Return of Dexter Morgan
Everything changed last summer at San Diego Comic-Con when Clyde Phillips surprised fans by announcing Dexter: Resurrection. This new installment will bring Michael C. Hall back as Dexter in the leading role. Filming kicks off next week, and the excitement is palpable.
Release Date for Dexter: Resurrection
According to showrunner Clyde Phillips, Dexter: Resurrection is scheduled to premiere in June 2025. While an exact date has not yet been confirmed, fans can mark their calendars for an exciting summer.
Confirmed Cast Members
Currently, Michael C. Hall is the only officially announced actor for Dexter: Resurrection. However, James Remar, who played Harry Morgan, recently confirmed his return in a brief Cameo video for a fan.
Additionally, The Cinemaholic reports that David Zayas will reprise his role as Angel Batista, while Jack Alcott is set to return as Harrison Morgan.
Writers, Director, and Showrunner
Scott Reynolds is writing the series and serving as an executive producer, joined by new writer Matt Venne. Clyde Phillips, the visionary behind Dexter’s most acclaimed seasons and Dexter: New Blood, returns as showrunner. Additionally, Marcos Siega will once again direct select episodes of Dexter: Resurrection.
Multiple Seasons Confirmed
Unlike Dexter: New Blood, which was intended as a one-off series, Dexter: Resurrection is planned as a multi-season show. Both Michael C. Hall and Clyde Phillips have expressed their commitment to this long-term vision.
Is There a Trailer or Teaser?
Yes! Showtime released the first teaser trailer for Dexter: Resurrection following the premiere of Dexter: Original Sin. You can watch it below.
Filming Locations and Schedule
Scott Reynolds shared an image last month from a location scouting session in New York City. Principal photography is set to take place in Yonkers, New York, from January 9 to April 15, 2025.
Episode Count for Season 1
While the exact number of episodes hasn’t been confirmed, it’s expected that Dexter: Resurrection will follow the 10-episode-per-season format used in Dexter: Original Sin.
How Did Dexter Survive?
The premiere episode of Dexter: Original Sin, titled “And in the Beginning...”, revealed that Dexter was rushed to the emergency room at Iron Lake and revived by doctors. Certain events from the prequel series, now streaming on Paramount+ with Showtime, are presented as Dexter’s memories.
In a recent interview, showrunner Clyde Phillips offered a scientific explanation for how Dexter survived:
"If Dexter had been shot on a summer’s day, he would have died. But he was shot in zero-degree temperatures, in the snow. He didn’t bleed out, and they were able to save him. That’s how we were able to resurrect him," he explained.
Returning and Rumored Cast Members
Returning Cast: Besides Hall, Remar, Zayas, and Alcott, more familiar faces may join the cast.
Rumored Additions: Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Gillian Anderson (The X-Files), and Uma Thurman (Kill Bill) are being considered for key roles. However, it’s speculated that only one of the actresses—Anderson or Thurman—will ultimately join.
