A specific quote from Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips in a recent interview has fans debating the true nature of Krysten Ritter’s return as Mia Lapierre.

It has been months since it was officially confirmed that Lady Vengeance will return in the second season of Dexter: Resurrection, with Krysten Ritter reprising her role as Mia Lapierre from Season 1. Soon after the announcement, dozens of set images appeared online, giving fans their first glimpse at her return.
At first, fans who were convinced that Mia could not possibly be returning in the flesh took a very close look at those behind-the-scenes images, trying to find enough evidence to confirm that she was actually coming back. If true, that would mean Mia faked her death in Season 1, Episode 6 rather than returning as another ghostly presence in Dexter Morgan’s inner landscape, as it has happened with a handful of characters throughout the franchise.
And while things seemed relatively clear in recent weeks, a new interview with showrunner Clyde Phillips following the release date announcement has made things a little more... complicated again.
Some fans are now wondering whether Lady Vengeance really did die in Season 1 and will instead return as a ghost haunting Dexter Morgan.
Clyde Phillips’ Cryptic Lady Vengeance Tease
It all comes down to a specific tease from Phillips, who was asked about Mia’s return toward the end of the interview.
When asked how Lady Vengeance could possibly come back after seemingly dying in prison, Phillips first said, “How can she come back...” before adding, “Well, this is Dexter after all!”
That second sentence in particular has actually caught the attention of some fans.
Based on comments we've seen from fans on social media, many believe Phillips' wording could suggest that Mia will return as a ghost. After all, this is Dexter, where dead characters have repeatedy returned in visions, hallucinations, or as part of Dexter's mind.
Perhaps some of those fans are the same people who pushed back against a theory that emerged back in August 2025, shortly after Season 1 aired. That theory suggested that Mia never actually died in her prison cell, and that her death was staged by Charley with the help of the corrupt prison guard whom Uma Thurman's character had bribed an episode earlier.
Now that theory appears to be looking increasingly likely based on the various set evidence we've discussed in previous articles. Yet Phillips' latest comments have caused some fans to take a step back and question whether Mia really survived after all.
Another Clue Suggests Lady Vengeance Is Alive
There is however, something that could contradict the interpretation of Phillips' comments.
Entertainment Weekly's editor described Mia's return by saying that, after seemingly dying last season in prison, Krysten Ritter's Mia LaPierre is “rising from the dead,” adding that it is a safe bet she will be living up to her Lady Vengeance name, especially considering that Dex is the one who got her arrested.
Of course, we cannot know if the journalist has any direct knowledge of the plot or scripts for Dexter: Resurrection Season 2. But the wording is definitely interesting because it presents Mia's return as something happening in the flesh and not just another ghostly appearance.
Is Lady Vengeance Really a Ghost?
At this point, there is still no official confirmation explaining exactly how Mia survived or what form her return will take. Phillips' “this is Dexter after all” comment is certainly ambiguous enough to keep the ghost theory alive. Of course, we should keep in mind that those words might be intentional, in order to confuse fans.
But the evidence we've seen so far points much more strongly toward Mia being alive.
Mia was never as closely connected to Dex on a personal level as characters such as Harry, Debra or even Biney. More importantly, the recent official still featuring Ritter's character suggests that Lady Vengeance still has a lot of story left to give if she is actually alive.
