Dexter Boss Reveals Why Dexter Will Need to Be Smarter Than Ever in Resurrection Season 2

Clyde Phillips opened up about the change Dexter Morgan is naturally experiencing, and how he'll adapt to overcome it.

Dexter Morgan is getting older, and according to showrunner Clyde Phillips, that reality will continue to influence Dexter: Resurrection Season 2.

While Dexter's age won't become the main focus of the story, Phillips revealed that the character will increasingly need to depend on his intelligence as age-related physical challenges actually begin to affect him.

During a recent interview with Collider, Phillips was asked whether the physical and emotional fatigue that Dex experienced in Season 1 would continue to play a role in future episodes. According to the showrunner, the series will continue to acknowledge Dexter's age and limitations, but without allowing them take over the story.

Instead, those changes will become an important part of Dexter's continued growth as a character.

Why Dexter Will Need to Be Smarter Than Ever

One of the biggest changes for Dexter is how he deals with problems and tracks down enemies.

Phillips explained that as Dexter gets older, he won't always be able to rely on physical ability the way he did in the past. Using the example of a man in his 50s chasing someone in their 30s, Phillips said that Dexter definitely understands his limitations and at this point it is more likely to outsmart a target than outrun one.

That change actually means that Dexter's greatest strength may no longer be his physical power or endurance, but his ability to think and stay many steps ahead of everyone around him.

Phillips also revealed that conversations with Michael C. Hall definitely helped shape this aspect of the character. Both understood that age is something neither the actor nor Dexter Morgan can avoid, and the writers have embraced that reality as part of the character's development.

However, Phillips made it clear that Dexter's age won't become a central theme of the series.

Instead, Season 2 will continue showing how an older Dexter adjusts to new challenges, forcing him to rely less on physical advantages and more on careful planning, and of course, intelligence.

Dexter's Midlife Crisis Will Be Part of Season 2

Dexter's age will not only affect the way he works in the field.

Paramount's official synopsis for Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 has already confirmed that Dexter will be dealing with a midlife crisis. Although specific details have not been revealed, the storyline suggests that Season 2 will explore parts of Dexter Morgan's life and personality that previous installments of the franchise never had the chance to examine.

Rather than pretending time has not passed, the series actually appears ready to embrace the reality that Dexter is entering a new stage of life.

As a result, Season 2 could deliver one of the most interesting versions of Dexter yet. An older killer who can no longer depend on speed or physical dominance, forcing him to lean on the one thing that may be sharper than ever, which is... his mind!
