Eric Stonestreet Teases Rapunzel’s Future in Dexter: Resurrection: “Nobody Gets Away From Dexter”

The actor who played Al Walker in Season 1 still has unfinished business with Dexter, although his return has not been confirmed yet.

Looking back at Season 1 of Dexter: Resurrection, audiences were introduced to some new and notorious serial killers, largely thanks to one episode that quickly became a fan favorite across the franchise. Episode 4, titled “Call Me Red,” brought in several well-known actors in killer roles, including Eric Stonestreet.

Best known in recent years for his comedic work on Modern Family, where he spent nine seasons as a series lead, Stonestreet took a significant turn by portraying a serial killer known as Rapunzel. Despite appearing in only three episodes, his character Al Walker actually left a lasting impression.

While the other guests from Leon Prater’s infamous dinner party were eliminated one by one, Al somehow managed to avoid Dexter’s kill table, making him one of the very few to slip through the cracks.

In a recent interview with TV Insider, Stonestreet reflected on his time in Dexter: Resurrection and addressed a fan theory. He explained that he doesn’t believe Al ever realized that Ronald Schmidt was actually Dexter Morgan the Bay Harbor Butcher. According to him, while the show’s creators could always retroactively shape that interprtation, his personal opinion is that Al was still unaware.

He described Al as someone more outward-facing and somewhat naive, meaning that he wasn’t the type to pick up on something so dark, at least not right away, though he hinted that awareness might have come later.

When asked directly about whether fans might see Al Walker again, Stonestreet gave a teasing response. He actually pointed out that very few people truly escape Dexter, recalling how even on set, he questioned how many characters had ever managed to get away. The answer, he noted, was not many. With that in mind, he suggested that Al’s story might not be over, leaving the door open for future developments.

That alone actually hints that Stonestreet could already be aware of plans for a return. After all, Dexter does not like to leave loose ends. While the actor avoided to confirm anything outright, his comments sound ominous but also exciting.

The real question now is where that potential reunion would take place. Would Dexter and Al cross paths again in New York City, or could Dexter be the one forced to travel to Milwaukee? Either way, it is a matter of time before we find out.
