Director Marcos Siega, who shared the behind-the-scenes photo, recently addressed the growing fan theories.
The first week of filming for Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 is officially in the books, and it turned out to be far more revealing than anyone expected. Dozens of set photos and early character glimpses surfaced within a couple of days, but one small detail from day one actually stood out, but only sharp-eyed fans were able to catch it first.
We’re talking about a specific behind-the-scenes photo shared by director Marcos Siega, taken on the very first day of shooting Season 2. At first glance, it looked like a simple shot of M99 props on a desk, but the self-adhesive labels of the bottle surprisingly had a 1992 expiration date. And that year just so happens to line up perfectly with the timeline of Dexter: Original Sin.
Inevitably, that tiny detail sparked speculation that Patrick Gibson, who played young Dexter in the cancelled prequel, could be set to appear in a flashback scene in the Season 2 premiere. It wasn’t an obvious tease by any means since you had to zoom to notice it, but it actually felt deliberate enough to get us talking.
Here at Dexter Daily, we were actually the first to point out that date connection, and after our article went live the same day Siega posted the image, several other entertainment websites picked up on the theory as well.
Fan reaction was mostly positive, with many convinced that the detail wasn’t random and that it really hinted at Gibson’s return. Others weren’t so sure, arguing it could simply be a coincidence and that Paddy Gibson cameo at this point might not make much sense. Among the skeptics was Jim from BingetownTV, who even posted an Instagram reel discussing our take.
That reel eventually caught Siega’s attention, and he took the opportunity to publicly address the photo with a comment, for the first time:
“So glad that detail was noticed. But it was simply a photo I took of an M99 bottle and syringe that actually has nothing to do with this season.”
It was a welcome clarification that felt honest, but based on the feedback, not everyone is buying it. Even if a Patrick Gibson cameo were actually planned, it’s impossible to imagine anyone involved with the show confirming it outright, especially with NDAs in place through Paramount.
What’s interesting, is that there’s another interesting layer to all of this, that was pointed out by Gareth Watkins, on the latest episode of the Dissecting Dexter podcast. Just three days before filming began, writer and executive producer Scott Reynolds shared a couple of images connected directly to Dexter: Original Sin.
One showed young Dexter’s Miami Metro laminate, captioned, “Remember when Dexter was an intern? #DexterOriginalSin Those were good times,” while the other featured a cassette tape that was featured in the prequel’s opening sequence, with Reynolds adding, “More memories from the Original Sin daze.”
While those posts reignited fan desire to bring the prequel back, it’s actually hard to ignore the timing. Some people (rightfully so) might wonder why revisit a cancelled series right before production starts on its sequel, unless there’s some kind of connection?
If anything, this past few weeks have made it obvious that the team behind Dexter: Resurrection knows exactly how to tease its audience. And even when they downplay it, the clues don’t really seem accidental. A recent legit example was a subtle “BC” tease spotted in a photo from the New York production offices, which turned out to be a nod to Brian Cox joining the cast, something confirmed just days later.
So...what do you think? Should Siega’s explanation be taken seriously, or is there still more to that M99 detail than meets the eye?
