Day 1 of production is here, and there’s already a major clue pointing to a returning actor from the cancelled prequel.
Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 has started filming in New York City, and even though cameras have only just begun rolling, it looks like we may already have a very exciting (and potentially very important) clue about a returning actor. And interestingly enough, this hint actually comes straight from a newly shared behind-the-scenes photo from the set.
On the morning of April 13, director Marcos Siega announced to his followers that filming for Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 is officially underway. Along with the announcement, he shared a batch of fresh behind-the-scenes pics from set.
Most of them give a standard look behind the scenes, but one photo in particular includes a small yet significant detail that immediately caught our attention. And it might be pointing to the return of a star from the cancelled Dexter: Original Sin.
In that specific image, we can see a table set up with some very familiar tools. A syringe that Dexter uses to capture his victims, a bottle of M99 (etorphine hydroclhoride), which is the substance used in the syringe, and a couple of self-adhesive labels placed nearby. At first glance, everything about it gives the impression of a typical present-day scene about Dexter Morgan.
However, things actually take a very interesting turn once you take a closer look:
As we zoomed in on the labels, we noticed a massive clue that definitely changes the context of the scene. The expiration date on the M99 bottle is not from the 2020s, as we would expect for a present-day timeline. Instead, it’s dated December 30, 1992.
That detail alone places the scene more than 30 years in the past, long before the events of Dexter: Resurrection. And just like that, what initially seemed like a setup for Michael C. Hall’s present-day Dexter potentially turns into something entirely different!
Based on this major evidence, it now looks very likely that Episode 1 of Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 could actually feature a cameo from Patrick Gibson, who portrayed a 20-year-old Dexter Morgan in Dexter: Original Sin.
Of course, it is impossible to say for sure whether Marcos Siega intentionally included this huge clue in the image as a way to test how sharp-eyed fans really are, or if it simply slipped through by accident. Either way, the detail is way too specific (and honestly far too deliberate) for us to ignore.
All things considered, the 1992 date is a major indicator that Gibson may indeed be reprising his role as young Dexter in the upcoming second season of the sequel series. The only real question now is how this would be incorporated into the story.
At this point, there are two very likely scenarios. The scene could play out as a flashback set during Dexter’s early years, giving us another look at his past. On the other hand, it could also be a hallucination or a memory, with present-day Dex reflecting on his younger self.
Both options would definitely fit within the tone of the series anyway, so it really could go either way.
If this does turn out to be a legit clue pointing to Patrick Gibson’s return, it would also mark the third time an actor from Dexter: Original Sin reprises their role in Dexter: Resurrection. The first two were child actors Eli Sherman, who played 3-year-old Dexter, and Xander Matteo, who portrayed a 7-year-old Brian. Both appeared in quick flashes that were actually filmed specifically for the sequel series.
This time, though, things might be a bit different. If Gibson does return, it could serve as an emotional send-off to his version of 20-year-old Dexter Morgan, especially following the unexpected cancellation of Dexter: Original Sin last summer.
For now, nothing has been officially confirmed, but the clue is definitely there, and it’s definitely hard to ignore!
So, what do you think? Is this an obvious hint that Patrick Gibson will appear in the Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 premiere?
