Dexter Creator Says Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 Wants to Recreate the Classic Dexter Intro

The Showrunner confirmed that the second season aims to bring back the iconic opening intro from the original series.

If we go back to the original run of Dexter, one element actually stands out as a defining part of the show’s identity, and that is of course the opening title sequence. Ever since it first appeared in the second episode of Season 1, the intro set the tone for viewers.

The sequence, accompanied by the beloved score composed by Rolfe Kent, remained a staple of the series for 95 episodes, all the way through the original finale in 2013.

However, when Dexter: New Blood brought the character back eight years later, the creative team moved away from the iconic opening and actually replaced it with a faster and more minimal intro. That approach continued with Season 1 of Dexter: Resurrection. Now, though, it seems that the team behind the show is seriously considering bringing the title sequence back for the upcoming season.

In a new interview with ScreenRant from the red carpet at Sunday’s Saturn Awards, showrunner Clyde Phillips spoke about the possibility of reviving the classic intro.

Phillips explained that while he hasn’t yet discussed the idea directly with the production team, there is an actual desire to recreate the original title sequence. He noted that it may be challenging because (in his own words) both time and budget are limited, but expressed confidence that the team will find a way to make it happen, as they usually do.

What he said echoes what he mentioned during a podcast interview back in November. Hearing Phillips talk about it again means that the idea is still being taken seriously behind the scenes, and that is something that makes a return of the Dexter intro more likely than ever.

The timing would also make the comeback even more meaningful, since the original Dexter premiered in October 2006, meaning the franchise will celebrate its 20th anniversary this October. Having the opening sequence back in Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 would be a nice tribute, not just to two decades of Dexter, but also to the fact that the series continues to make new episodes after several breaks.

Despite its slightly longer runtime compared to modern TV intros, the original sequence (created by the design studio Digital Kitchen) is one that many viewers do not prefer to skip. Its cinematography style filled with extreme close-ups of ordinary morning rituals, transforms simple actions into subtle metaphors for violence, in a clever way. And that creative approach actually helped the intro to become one of the most recognizable openings in television.

More recently, we were happy to see a brilliant recreation of the intro in Dexter: Original Sin, a very smart decision that actually set the tone for viewers and paid homage to the original one.

The big question is how Dexter: Resurrection might recreate the title sequence. The possibilities are many, especially since Dexter is now in a very different setting than Miami. Since the story takes place in New York, the creative team will need to think of something that captures the spirit of the original but also fit the darker environment of the Big Apple.

For many fans out there, though, the idea of the classic intro returning is already amazing news. Both the Dexter: New Blood and Dexter: Resurrection Season 1 openings received criticism from viewers, particularly because they revealed moments from the episode about to play. Replacing it with a reinvneted version of the OG sequence would not only fix that issue, but actually restore maybe the most beloved Dexter tradition!
