How far into the future will the events of the second season take place?
As Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 continues to take shape in the writers’ room in Los Angeles, official updates have been few and far between. Still, the silence is a little easier to sit with when you realize that we are now much closer to the start of filming for the next chapter than we are to the day Season 1 wrapped its run. That alone actually makes the waiting game feel far more manageable.
As expected, and especially with new audiences discovering the series through post-finale binge-watching, fan theories about Season 2 are spreading online. Most of the speculation centers on the big bad of the new season, but one theory actually stands out as far more substantial. That is the question of the timeline, and whether Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 will feature a time jump.
To understand where Season 2 could land chronologically, it helps to rewind all the way back to Dexter: New Blood. The events of that miniseries took place during the same period it aired, from early to late December 2021. Dexter: Resurrection picked up ten weeks later, with Dexter awakening from his coma in late February 2022. So even though the latest revival premiered in the summer of 2025, its story was intentionally set about three and a half years earlier to maintain internal continuity and of course make the timeline work.
That brings us to the big question: how far into the future will Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 take place? There’s no official answer yet, but a recent interview with showrunner Clyde Phillips on The Dark Passengers podcast offers an interesting clue. In response to a question related to a potential time jump, Phillips (unsurprisingly) avoided to give a clear answer, and noted that for next season they had to “kind of seem up the time” previously because they were “locked into Iron Lake when Dexter got shot.”
While that comment does not outright confirm a time jump, it does actually hint at a meaningful structural shift. By pointing out how New Blood was constrained by its setting and circumstances, Phillips is suggesting that Resurrection is no longer boxed in by the same limitations.
The implication is that the writers now have more freedom to let time move forward naturally, whether that means brief gaps between story arcs or a broader passage of time overall. What it actually feels like for now is less a promise of a defined jump and more an acknowledgment of creative flexibility.
What the Season 2 Filming Period Hints
There is also the production schedule to consider, which in fact may offer the clearest clue yet. Season 2 is set to begin filming on April 13, with production potentially running through September. That places filming squarely in spring and summer, and in a city like New York, those seasonal changes are impossible to hide. The visual reality of the city being in full bloom definitely matters, and it actually suggests that the story itself will be set during a warmer time of the year.
Based on that alone, Season 2 could take place just a few months after the Season 1 finale, which ended in late March 2022, placing the story in the summer of 2022. Another possibility is a one-year jump, moving the timeline into spring or summer of 2023. Either option would align naturally with the production window without forcing the show to fight against...its own visuals.
What is Holding Back a Big Time Jump
What ultimately limits the possibility of a much larger time jump is the story itself. At this point in Dexter: Resurrection, both Miami Metro and the NYPD will be dealing with hte aftermath of Batista’s death, while Detective Claudette Wallace continues her pursuit of the New York Ripper. We can all understand that these are active plot threads that actually need momentum, and skipping too far ahead would risk their impact.
For that reason, a huge leap forward to fully sync the show with real-world time truly feels unlikely. Whatever the final decision is, the handling of the timeline was almost certainly one of the first major choices the writers locked in when breaking Season 2. And as small as it may seem for some, it definitely shapes everything that follows in the series.
