It’s officially Friday, and that can only mean one thing: Dexter: Resurrection is back on our screens with a brand-new episode — and Episode 3, titled “Backseat Driver,” is already lighting up the fandom with excitement, shock, and nostalgia.

This week’s episode is written by Nick Zayas (known for Dexter: Original Sin) and directed by none other than Monica Raymund, the Chicago Fire alum who's clearly making waves behind the camera. Together, they’ve delivered a tightly woven and emotionally charged chapter that blends sharp writing with classic Dexter tension.

Picking up right after the events of Episode 2 — which was penned by longtime Dexter showrunner Scott Buck — “Backseat Driver” follows Dexter as he navigates his first chaotic days in New York City. From awkward social interactions to internal battles with his Dark Passenger, we see Dexter struggle to maintain a façade of normalcy, especially in his new role as a driver for UrCar. Thankfully, Blessing Kamara continues to be a stabilizing force in his life — a much-needed ally who seems to understand Dexter in ways no one else currently does.

But let’s talk about the real reasons fans are calling this episode a return to form.

First, Dexter’s back in his element. After a tense game of cat and mouse, he finally captures and eliminates Ronald Schmidt, aka the twisted Dark Passenger Killer — marking the first major kill of the season and a clear sign that the “Bay Harbor Butcher” mindset is fully reawakened. It’s a brutal but strangely cathartic moment, especially after the vulnerability Dexter showed during his 10-week coma.

Second, and perhaps most thrilling of all — legacy characters are back! We already knew Joey Quinn (Desmond Harrington) was returning, but fans were floored to see a surprise cameo from Vince Masuka (C.S. Lee), too. And let’s not forget Angel Batista (David Zayas), who continues to play a key role in this new chapter. Seeing these familiar faces again hit hard — in the best way.
