Could James Doakes make an appearance soon in Dexter: Original Sin?
Dexter: Original Sin is here and has been impressing fans in many areas, but one category that’s truly standing out is the casting. According to fan feedback, the team has nailed the challenging task of finding actors who not only resemble their original counterparts but also bring stellar acting skills and on-screen chemistry.
Behind this success is casting director John Papsidera, who faced the monumental challenge of casting these roles over several months leading up to early 2024. The goal? To find actors who could embody the essence of beloved characters while creating a seamless connection to the original series.
Now, six episodes into Dexter: Original Sin, the results speak for themselves. Patrick Gibson expertly channels Michael C. Hall’s signature style as Dexter. Molly Brown impressively captures Jennifer Carpenter’s distinctive mannerisms as Deb, while Christian Slater, despite not strongly resembling James Remar, delivers a compelling portrayal of Harry.
For the younger versions of Miami Metro’s iconic characters, the casting continues to shine. Alex Shimizu is a fantastic young Masuka, James Martinez is a near-perfect match for David Zayas as Batista, and Christina Milian convincingly steps into the role of young LaGuerta.
What About James Doakes?
One lingering question among fans is who might portray James Doakes in future seasons of Dexter: Original Sin. Erik King’s portrayal of Doakes made him one of the most iconic and beloved characters in the franchise. Whoever takes on this role will face the daunting task of matching King’s commanding voice and unforgettable mannerisms.
However, based on Dexter: Original Sin’s timeline, it appears Doakes won’t be joining Miami Metro PD anytime soon. In the original series, it’s established that Doakes was part of the special forces in 1991, making his arrival at Miami Metro unlikely for now.
Clyde Phillips on Doakes’ Future
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Clyde Phillips, who helmed Dexter seasons 1-4, Dexter: New Blood, and Dexter: Original Sin, addressed the possibility of Doakes returning to the prequel. When asked about the likelihood of bringing iconic characters like Doakes into Original Sin, Phillips said:
“(Laughs) Well, I think that’s the most powerful presence, who saw through Dexter, or at least looked at Dexter and saw something else that no one else saw. That Dexter wasn’t as blended in as he thinks. That whole, ‘I’m watching you, motherf***er!’ I can’t tell you when that will happen, but to answer your question, that’s probably the most exciting thing that has to happen.”
While fans eagerly anticipate Doakes’ eventual introduction, the first season of Dexter: Original Sin has already set a high standard, proving that this prequel series has what it takes to honor the legacy of the original.
