Patrick Dempsey Reveals the Story Behind His Character's Mustache in Dexter: Original Sin

The actor revealed that Aaron has known Dexter since he was a little boy.

One of the most exciting additions to the cast of Dexter: Original Sin is undoubtedly Patrick Dempsey. The former Grey's Anatomy star joined the prequel in late June, taking on the role of Miami Metro's Captain Aaron Spencer.

Showtime recently unveiled the final behind-the-scenes featurette, Autopsy Report, where Dempsey introduces his character and provides insights into his role on the show.

Dempsey's Mustache: The Backstory

When discussing Captain Spencer's distinctive look, Dempsey explained the inspiration behind the character's mustache:

"I got out of the shower and started shaving, but I kept the mustache. My hair was slicked back, and I thought, this is the perfect look. I sent a video to the Makeup and Hair team and to Clyde [Phillips, the showrunner], and they loved the idea."

Captain Aaron Spencer: A Complex Leader

Dempsey also shed light on who Captain Aaron Spencer is:

"Captain Aaron Spencer is the head of homicide, overseeing every investigation while acting as the public face of the department. He also has to navigate the pressures of working with the mayor. Spencer and [Harry] Morgan have been partners since their early days on the force in the '70s, and we explore their history through flashbacks that really flesh out their story."

His Connection to Dexter

"Aaron has known Dexter since he was a little boy and has watched him grow up. They share a strong bond, and he genuinely wants Dexter to succeed."

Sacrificing for the Job

Dempsey described Captain Spencer as a character deeply committed to his work:

"He's incredibly passionate about his job, to the point where it’s consumed his entire life. He’s always on call—the one they wake up in the middle of the night. That dedication has taken a heavy toll on his personal life and shaped his temperament. Exploring the character’s volatility has been a lot of fun and quite liberating."
