Although Dexter Morgan made it clear in the OG Dexter pilot that he wasn't interested in intimate relationships, the events of the series eventually proved him wrong. As the show progressed, we saw our favorite antihero get involved with many women, and that continued all the way through Dexter: New Blood.
So far, however, Dexter: Resurrection has taken a different approach. But could that finally change in Season 2? And, more importantly, with whom?
Some fans believe Dexter's romantic life might be about to take an unexpected turn, and it all comes down to a few intriguing words Michael C. Hall used during a recent press interview.
Did Michael C. Hall Just Hint at a Romance Between Dexter and Charley?
Speaking with YouTube channel The Knockturnal during a press junket interview alongside Uma Thurman, Hall actually shared some interesting thoughts about Dexter's relationship with Charley Brown, who is returning to New York City and his life in the upcoming season:
"I think Charley and Dexter are both at a crossroads," Hall said. "But I think they're both contending with their past and trying to reckon with it and move forward in a way that makes some kind of resonant sense for them. And that's a part of their attraction and why they hook up, I mean, in as much as they do."
It was the actor's use of the words "attraction" and "hook up" that caught fans' attention, creating theories that Hall might have accidentally revealed that Dexter and Charley are about to go from enemies to lovers.
And there is already some reason to believe that could be the case.
Ever since set photos from Season 2's second episode surfaced online back in May, fans have been speculating about the nature of their relationship. The images showed Hall and Thurman holding hands while the cameras were rolling, during what appeared to be a romantic late-night dinner.
Surprisingly, the moment was also included in the first batch of official episode stills released by Paramount+ in late July, although that alone was enough to make us wonder whether things were really as they seemed.
Now, Hall's latest comments have actually fueled those theories, leaving a portion fans convinced that Dexter and Charley could become romantically involved. But... are they reading too much into his words?
What Did Michael C. Hall Really Mean?
At first glance, Hall's comments definitely seem to point toward a possible romance. However, there might be another explanation for what he meant.
The actor appears to be suggesting that Dexter and Charley are attracted to each other because they share something significant. And that is their hatred of serial killers. Both characters have their own complicated pasts to reckon with, and that common ground could actually explain why they connect on a deeper level.
As for Hall's use of the phrase "hook up," while it's often associated with romantic or intimate encounters, it doesn't necessarily mean that's what he was referring to here. He could simply have been describing the way Dexter and Charley connect, particularly in a professional way, rather than hinting at a romantic relationhsip.
Of course, anything is possible, and we could eventually see the two of them end up in bed together. For now, though, the most plausible interpretation is that Hall was talking about the attraction between two like-minded people rather than confirming a new romance.
Whatever their relationship turns out to be, Dexter and Charley's dynamic will be one of the most exciting parts of the upcoming season. What is your interpretation on what Michael C. Hall said?
