One of the biggest mysteries heading into Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 is why the New York Ripper is still a free man, even after a three-to-four-year time jump. Now, Brian Cox has offered an explanation, and it reveals why one of the NYPD's most frustrating cases remains unsolved.
The upcoming season will finally bring the notorious serial killer, played by Cox, into the spotlight after his introduction in Season 1. It is actually the first time in the franchise's history that a major antagonist teased in one season will take center stage in the next, and fans' fascination with the Ripper has definitely helped make that happen.
But if so much time has passed, why hasn't Don Framt been arrested yet? According to Cox, one crucial piece of evidence is still missing.
During a junket interview with TVLine's Nick Caruso, Cox explained that the NYPD still lacks matching DNA evidence from the period when Framt was active. As the actor put it:
"He's crafty. They don't have DNA, so that serves him and he's been very careful about his DNA."
In other words, Framt's carefulness has helped him stay one step ahead of the authorities. It also explains why the discovery of his file at Leon Prater's secret vault wasn't actually enough to put him behind bars.
In the Season 1 finale, authorities discovered a file containing Framt's name and personal information after raiding the billionaire's hidden vault. While the discovery gave the homicide department an important lead, it definitely wasn't enough to secure an arrest. Without the DNA evidence linking Framt to his crimes, the police still don't have what they need to close the case.
Detective Wallace Has Everything Except One Crucial Piece of Evidence
This lack of evidence is especially frustrating for Detective Claudette Wallace, played by Kadia Saraf. She has spent more than two decades working on the New York Ripper case, and the Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 trailer has already revealed that she'll get the chance to interrogate Framt.
Speaking about her character's biggest challenge in the upcoming season, Saraf highlighted the frustration of being so close to solving a case but still being unable to bring it to an end. In the actress's own words, it's about "having everything in front of me, and not being able to solve it".
That actually gives us a better idea of what Wallace will be dealing with in the second season. She may finally have a lead that puts her face-to-face with the man she's been chasing for years, but knowing who she's dealing with and having enough evidence to arrest him are two very different things.
The question now is whether Wallace can find what she needs before Framt slips away again. And, of course, there's another factor worth watching: Dexter Morgan has his... own way of dealing with serial killers. Will he let the NYPD handle the New York Ripper, or will he find himself involved with the case?
