Later this month, it will be exactly one year since Dexter: Original Sin, the prequel series following a 20-year-old Dexter Morgan and starring Patrick Gibson, was canceled, or more accurately, un-renewed. Although the show was officially renewed for a second season on April 1, 2025, that decision was unexpectedly reversed just a few months later following major leadership changes at the company.
The cancellation quickly triggered a backlash from fans, many of whom began campaigning for the series to return. A petition calling for Dexter: Original Sin Season 2 actually reached 100,000 signatures in just one month.
Several cast members, including young Masuka actor Alex Shimizu, publicly supported the campaign, but despite the overwhelming fan response, Paramount+ has not changed its decision.
James Martinez Reflects on Dexter: Original Sin's Cancellation
One of the cast members who has been especially open about the show's abrupt ending is James Martinez, who brilliantly portrayed a younger Angel Batista.
Like the rest of the cast, Martinez had the difficult challenge of bringing a younger version of a beloved character to life. The entire ensemble put in the work to honor the OG series, and the result exceeded many fans' expectations. Unfortunately, it ultimately became a one-season journey.
Earlier on Monday, Martinez took to Instagram and shared a photo of the Paramount+ homepage, where Dexter: Original Sin was among the featured titles. The thumbnail happened to feature his version of Batista, actually giving him the perfect opportunity to reflect on the show's fate.
"Gone too soon," he wrote, before adding another message that carried a bit of optimism: "But we're still up there."
It is a simple but also genuine reaction from someone who became part of the Dexter family and hoped the prequel would continue for years. Instead, despite its strong viewership and positive reception, the series came to an unexpected end.
Fans and Cast Haven't Given Up Hope
Since the cancellation, discussions about whether Dexter: Original Sin could somehow return have never really stopped.
One of the people who addressed the possibility was Dexter: Resurrection executive producer and director Marcos Siega, who encouraged fans to keep talking about the show, suggesting that continued support could potentially make a difference one day.
The cancellation was especially surprising because the series had already been renewed. At one point, there were even rumors that a writers' room was about to open for Season 2. That never actually happened, and the project was ultimately shelved in August 2025.
Interestingly, something very similar recently happened with Marvel's Wonder Man, which was also reportedly greenlit before its renewal was later reversed. Reacting to that news, Alex Shimizu commented that this... growing trend of "un-renewing" television shows needs to stop, arguing that it creates uncertainty for everyone involved and could eventually make people in the industry hesitant to celebrate renewal announcements.
A Prequel That Still Holds Up
Honestly, rewatching Dexter: Original Sin today feels a little surreal, especially after revisiting the original series.
The prequel managed to capture the spirit of Dexter remarkably well. The casting was outstanding across almost the entire ensemble, and the production team did an awesome job recreating the Miami Metro Police Department from the ground up, bringing back one of the most iconic locations with impressive attention to detail.
Whether Paramount+ ever revisits Dexter: Original Sin Season 2 remains impossible to predict. For now, all fans can do is continue showing their support and hope that one day the story gets another chance. And based on recent evidence, the support from fans is still very strong.
