Desmond Harrington is back as a series regular in the upcoming season, opening the door to some exciting and potentially dangerous possibilities.
When Dexter: Resurrection premiered in July 2025, it brought back many familiar faces from the original series. Joey Quinn, Vince Masuka, and Angel Batista all returned, but it was Batista who actually played the biggest role in Season 1.
Sadly, that role ended in tragedy. Batista's determination to bring Dexter to justice ultimately blinded him to the bigger picture and cost him his life. Now, with Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 on the way, it looks like another OG character is stepping into a much bigger role: Joey Quinn.
The recent confirmation that Desmond Harrington will return as a series regular has excited fans, but it has also raised a lot of questions. Unlike his short appearance in Season 1, Quinn is now expected to have a much larger part in the story, and that opens the door to some very different possibilities.
Over the past few weeks, one concern has come up again and again among fans. Many worry that the show could simply repeat Batista's storyline by turning Quinn into "Batista 2.0" and sending him after Dexter in the exact same way.
Right now, though, the only thing we know for sure is that Quinn will be in New York City. Everything else actually remains a mystery, which means there are many directions the writers could take.
Until we learn more, here are three ways Quinn's return could threaten Dexter's story in Dexter: Resurrection Season 2.
1. Quinn Transfers to the NYPD to Investigate Batista's Death
Throughout the original series, Quinn and Batista developed one of Miami Metro's strongest friendships. Even though they had their disagreements over the years, they always had each other's backs.
After Batista's death, it is easy to imagine Quinn requesting a transfer from Miami Metro, where he is now a lieutenant, to the NYPD so he can find out what really happened. More importantly, he may want to find out whether Dexter had anything to do with it.
One important detail is that in Season 1 Quinn still doesn't know Dexter is alive. Batista never told anyone in Miami that Dexter had survived the events of the Season 8 finale. However, Quinn did speak with Detective Claudette Wallace during Season 1, more specifically Episode 8. After Batista's death, it's extremely possible they stayed in touch.
If that's the case, Wallace could reveal the real reason Batista traveled to New York in the first place. And that is because he believed Dexter Morgan was the true Bay Harbor Butcher.
That one piece of information could completely change the way Quinn sees Dexter.
2. Quinn Forms a Dangerous Alliance with Dexter (and Harrison)
This possibility is much less predictable, but it actually fits with what we know about Quinn from the original series. After all, Joey Quinn wasn't exactly the cleanest cop. As Season 4 made clear, he was willing to break the rules when it benefited him.
Instead of repeating Batista's storyline, Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 could surprise everyone by having Quinn understand Dexter instead of hunting him. Rather than turning him in, Quinn could choose to protect him.
That would also tie into one of the longest-running fan theories in Dexter history, that Quinn figured out who Dexter really was back in Season 5 but deliberately looked the other way.
There are many reasons fans believe this. Quinn loved Debra, but just as importantly, Dexter saved him from becoming a suspect in Stan Liddy's murder after LaGuerta discovered a blood drop in Quinn's shoe.
After that, Quinn's attitude toward Dexter changed completely. His suspicions faded, and he finally stopped investigating him.
Perhaps the strongest piece of evidence came during the Brain Surgeon's investigation, when Quinn dismissed the case by telling Batista it was "obviously self-defense." Many fans have always seen that moment as Quinn quietly helping Dexter avoid any trouble with justice.
Maybe Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 will finally answer the question fans have debated for over 15 years. If Quinn discovers Dexter wasn't directly responsible for Batista's death, he could decide to stand beside Dexter and Harrison instead of against them.
3. Quinn Learns the Truth and Finally Brings Dexter Down
This is the scenario many fans actually fear the most.
Sooner or later, Quinn is almost certainly going to learn that Dexter is alive and living in New York. Since he was already in contact with Detective Wallace during Season 1, Batista's death could easily bring the two even closer as they search for answers.
If Quinn really suspected Dexter's secret all those years ago but stayed silent because of Debra, Batista's death could completely change his thinking. Instead of protecting Dexter, Quinn may begin to see him as someone willing to do anything to keep his identity as the Bay Harbor Butcher hidden, even if it means former friends and colleagues end up dead.
In that scenario, Quinn would essentially follow the same path Batista did, only this time he might have the support of the NYPD and Detective Wallace from the very beginning. If they manage to connect the dots and gather enough evidence, Quinn could become the man who finally exposes Dexter Morgan and brings his story to an end.
Which Direction Will Quinn Take?
Right now, all three scenarios seem possible. Quinn could come to New York seeking justice for Batista, he could become one of Dexter's most unexpected allies, or he could finally expose Dexter as the Bay Harbor Butcher after years of suspicion by many other characters.
With Desmond Harrington now promoted to series regular, Joey Quinn could actually become one of the most important players in Dexter: Resurrection Season 2.
