Michael C. Hall Teases Dexter’s Most Dangerous Desire Yet in Dexter: Resurrection Season 2

A new need for Dexter Morgan might play a key role in the story of the upcoming season.

The second season of Dexter: Resurrection is now two full months into production, and while story details remain under wraps, some interesting new pieces of information continue to come out from time to time.

One of the latest updates comes from Michael C. Hall himself. During a recent interview with Gold Derby ahead of the Emmy Awards season, Hall shared a few intriguing details about what fans can expect from Dexter: Resurrection Season 2. The most interesting reveal may have to do with a new desire growing inside Dexter Morgan.

When asked whether he could tease anything about the upcoming season, Hall was (understandably) careful not to reveal too much. However, he did explain that as Dexter continues evolving as a character, he actually becomes more vulnerable to ordinary human needs and emotions in ways he wasn't before.

According to Hall, Dexter is becoming more integrated, embracing both his light and dark sides, the human and the monster. As a result, he is beginning to experience something that many people can definitely relate to. And that is a desire to be recognized. Hall noted that this creates a difficult conflict for Dex because his survival has always depended on remaining hidden.

This is honestly an a very interesting direction for the creative team behind Dexter: Resurrection to explore. The desire for recognition is actually something very human, that almost everyone has, either it's the need to be appreciated, understood, or valued, most people look for some form of acknowledgment from others at some point in their lives.

What Hall appears to be describing, however, is not a desire for Dexter to be recognized or... celebrated as a serial killer. Instead, it seems more likely that Dexter wants to be truly seen and understood as a complete person, with all of the... contradictions that come with him.

Of course, that desire has created problems for Dexter before. Throughout the OG Dexter series, he repeatedly sought meaningful connections with people who knew parts of his true self, including his sister Debra, Lila West, Miguel Prado, and Hannah McKay. Each relationship definitely gave him a chance to be understood, but each actually came with the consequences we all know.

The difference this time is that Dexter finds himself in an entirely new environment and at a very different stage of his life. Harrison is now an adult, and Dexter has gone through decades of experiences, bad decisions, and, of course, painful losses. If his need to be recognized keeps growing in Dexter: Resurrection Season 2, it could become one of the most interesting and also powerful internal struggles Dex has faced so far.

For a man who has spent his entire life hiding his true self, the desire to be truly seen could actually end up being more dangerous than ever.
