Is Angel Batista Really Gone? Michael C. Hall Says Dexter Isn’t Finished With Him in Resurrection Season 2

Michael C. Hall has hinted that Angel Batista’s story may not be over, despite the character’s fate in Dexter: Resurrection Season 1.

Throughout its 10-episode run, the first season of Dexter: Resurrection delivered plenty of shocking moments. However, one of the biggest came with the fate of Angel Batista, Dex's former friend and colleague. The beloved character, who had been part of the franchise since the very beginning, met a tragic end while pursuing the truth about the Bay Harbor Butcher.

But... is David Zayas really done with the role?

Recent developments surrounding Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 have already hinted that Batista's story may not be completely over. Now, Michael C. Hall has suggested that we may not have seen the last of Angel Batista.

During a recent interview with Gold Derby, Hall was asked whether Batista's spirit would continue to have a presence in Season 2 and if the character would still be mentioned going forward. Hall said it was reasonable to expect that Angel would continue to live on in Dexter's mind and heart, adding that the series could actually explore that idea in future episodes.

Earlier in the interview, Hall used the phrase "interior landscape" to describe the way Dexter interacts with figures from his past, such as Harry Morgan, Brian Moser, and Debra Morgan. He explained that on Dexter, death does not necessarily mean a character is gone forever. Hall noted that even deceased characters can still appear as manifestations within Dexter's mind.

Reflecting on Batista's death, Hall admitted it was a difficult storyline to play. He actually described Angel as one of the closest things Dexter ever had to a genuine friend.

According to Hall, Dexter's renewed sense of self allowed him to reconnect with Batista, but the circumstances between them prevented the friendship from ever returning to what it once was. While Dexter wished things could be different, Batista's obsession for justice ultimately pushed both of them into a confrontation, that abruptly ended because of Leon Prater.

Hall also spoke about Batista's emotional death scene in Episode 9. He explained that Dexter desperately hoped he could save Angel, but deep down knew the outcome could not be changed.

For Hall, the moment carried a huge emotional weight, not only for the character but also for the audience. He viewed Dexter's heartbreaking scream at the end of the episode as an expression of both personal grief and the collective sense of loss felt (especially) by longtime fans.

What Was It Like Reuniting With David Zayas?

After more than a decade away from sharing regular scenes together, Hall described working with David Zayas again as an incredible experience.

He revealed that throughout filming, both actors frequently found themselves amazed that they were revisiting a relationship they had first built nearly 20 years ago. Hall explained that actors typically have to imagine a character's history when performing scenes, but in this case, he and Zayas had real memories to draw from.

Could Batista Return in Dexter: Resurrection Season 2?

Unsurprisingly, it appears that Batista's story may not be over just yet.

Hall's comments strongly suggest that David Zayas could return in Dexter: Resurrection Season 2, not through a traditional flashback, but as part of Dexter's "interior landscape", which is the same narrative device that has actually kept characters like Harry, Brian, and Debra present long after their deaths. This time though, it is going to feel different, and we're here for it.
