5 Ways Krysten Ritter's Confirmed Return in Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 Could Happen

After months of speculation and fan theories, it's now confirmed that Krysten Ritter isn't finished with Dexter just yet. But how could she return?

For nearly 10 months, some fans have been asking the same question: How can Mia Lapierre possibly return after her apparent death? It started with some whispers online, but now, we finally know one thing for certain. Krysten Ritter is officially returning for Season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection.

The news came just as the second season reached the halfway point of filming, and actually reignited one of the biggest theories surrounding the show.

Mia, better known as Lady Vengeance, appeared to die in prison in Episode 6 of Season 1. Her death even became public knowledge, which is how Dexter Morgan himself learned that she was gone.

But if Mia is dead, how is Ritter returning?

Theories have been circulating ever since her seemingly final episode aired in early August of 2025, and even Ritter herself helped make the speculation stronger over the past year. Her appearance at the show's FYC event in New York City in May of 2026 alongside returning cast members only convinced fans even more that she wasn't really done with Dexter: Resurrection.

Here on Dexter Daily, we've been following every clue since last summer, and based on the evidence, the one thing that was always obvious is that Krysten Ritter's journey on Dexter wasn't really over.

So, what really happened? Here are the five most likely ways Mia Lapierre could return in Season 2.

1. Mia Lapierre Faked Her Death

This actually remains the most popular theory among fans.

The idea is that Charley secretly helped Mia escape from prison. Since Charley appears to know about Leon Prater's deadly rule, that any serial killer who gets arrested must die before they can expose him, some believe she had every reason to save Mia.

The theory suggests that Mia used makeup to make herself appear dead inside her cell. What creates even more suspicion, is that her pulse was checked only by the prison guard she had previously bribed. From there, fans believe she could have escaped once her body was taken to the morgue.

2. Krysten Ritter Is Playing a Completely Different Character

This theory may sound... far-fetched, but the wording used to announce Ritter's return on Deadline, definitely raised some eyebrows. The report that revealed her comeback said, "Who she will play is under wraps." It also noted that, considering Mia died in Season 1, her return is "anyone's guess."

Without a doubt, that's an interesting choice of words. Could the show be bringing Ritter back as an entirely new character? It wouldn't be the first time a TV show or a movie has reused an actor in a different role, although it would honestly be an unepxected twist.

3. Mia Has an Identical Twin Sister

If Ritter isn't returning as Mia, some fans think another possibility exists. And that is... a secret twin!

Yes, yes, we know what you're thinking. Season 1 already used a twin twist with Gareth #1 and Gareth #2, both played by David Dastmalchian. Because of that, the chances of another twin reveal seem pretty slim. Despite that, it is definitely worth mentioning as possibility.

4. Mia Returns as a Ghost or Hallucination

This might actually be one of the strongest theories.

Over the years, Dexter has been haunted by the people he has lost or wronged. We've seen characters like Harry, Debra and Brian appear as representations of his mind.

The Resurrection series premiere also proved that the series is willing to bring back other figures from Dexter's past, including James Doakes, Miguel Prado and Arthur Mitchell. Dexter played a huge role in Mia's downfall, so without him, her life may have turned out very differently.

And that could make her the perfect person to haunt him in Season 2.

5. It's All Part of a Flashback

The final possibility is actually one of the most simple one. Mia could return through flashbacks, possibly in scenes involving Charley and Leon Prater's inner circle. A flashback could reveal how Mia first met Charley, what happened behind the scenes at Prater's secret dinner parties, or even uncover secrets that viewers haven't seen yet.

The biggest question is how those scenes would fit into the bigger story, but flashbacks are a very believable way to bring Ritter back without undoing Mia's death.

So, Which Theory Is Most Likely?

Right now, anything is possible. Mia Lapierre could have faked her death. She could return as a hallucination, appear in flashbacks, or the writers could have an even bigger surprise waiting for fans.
