Dexter: Original Sin Season 2 Is ‘Impossible’ Now, Star Says After Paramount-Warner Bros. Deal

One of the prequel’s main stars has told fans it may be time to stop hoping for Dexter: Original Sin to be revived.

Dexter: Original Sin has been one of those shows that, for some people, never really had enough of a reason to exist. Ever since the concept was first announced three years ago, many fans questioned whether a prequel about the early years of Dexter Morgan was necessary at all, since those moments were visited in the original show’s first two seasons, through flashback scenes.

But once the series actually took shape in late 2024 and early 2025, the reaction turned out to be very different, and the majority of viewers ended up loving it. The show was very well cast and produced, and it managed to capture the atmosphere of 1991 Miami in an authentic way. And perhaps the biggest sign that fans connected with it was the reaction when the cancellation news broke.

When the show was cancelled last August, many fans were genuinely upset. Just hours after the announcement, a petition calling for the series to be saved started circulating online, and the support was actually loud and immediate. One of the strongest voices behind that amazing effort from within the cast was Alex Shimizu, who portrayed a younger version of Vince Masuka.

Through TikTok and Instagram, Shimizu helped spread the word and encouraged fans to sign the petition, joining forces with us here on Dexter Daily to keep the momentum going. The petition quickly gained attention and actually reached 100,000 signatures just a month after it launched. Despite the big support from fans, however, Paramount ultimately chose not to respond to the campaign.

For some time, hope still remained that the show could return. But recent industry developments may have closed that door for good.

Earlier this week, Shimizu spoke to fans in a private Instagram fan chat and shared a pessimistic update. According to him, the recent announcement that Paramount has agreed to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery could change the situation in a big way. With the company preparing for a massive merger that will reshape its priorities, the chances of continuing Dexter: Original Sin appear to be smaller than ever before.

In his message to fans, Shimizu wrote:

“The show is not coming back! I get a ton of comments on TikTok about it but I’m sorry to say it’s over. With recent news, it’s pretty much impossible Season 2 will ever happen. I’m sorry for letting you all down. Thank you for supporting the petition etc, but we all need to move on.”

While Alex himself doesn’t have insider information, his comments come from a general understanding of how the industry usually works. Once a major merger like this actually happens, it is normal for priorities to shift. Paramount may no longer feel the need to expand the Dexterverse further, especially if the company will soon have other major franchises under its umbrella.

For the cast of Dexter: Original Sin, the idea that the series would continue for more than one season actually seemed like a safe bet at first, since the show was developed during a time when former Paramount leadership, under Chris McCarthy, wanted to expand the show with multiple spinoffs. Because Dexter is a beloved IP, many of the cast members assumed they would be playing these roles for years.

But...that expectation changed the moment Skydance Media acquired Paramount last Summer. With new leadership, plans that initially seemed certain became uncertain, and for Dexter: Original Sin that change has ended the story way sooner than we expected and wanted.
