The Dexter: New Blood scene with Logan is still a hot topic, and the showrunner has finally opened up about it.
Dexter: Resurrection picks up only weeks after the shocking finale of Dexter: New Blood, forcing the writers to confront the lingering consequences of “Sins of the Father”—the episode that was meant to be the definitive ending of Michael C. Hall’s character.
When the sequel series was announced, showrunner Clyde Phillips and his writing team faced an enormous challenge: how to continue Dexter Morgan’s story without completely undermining the events of the New Blood finale, particularly the death of Officer Logan and Dexter’s narrow escape.
Phillips and his team needed a believable way to move forward: a continuation where Dexter could remain free without being under investigation for Logan’s death. Fans have long debated whether Logan’s death was a cold-blooded murder or a tragic accident, and now, years later, Phillips is finally setting the record straight.
The Truth Behind Logan’s Death
In the recent appearance on the Dissecting Dexter podcast, Clyde Phillips revisited the controversial scene. Although the interview wasn’t specifically about Dexter: Resurrection’s creative decisions, Phillips took time to clarify what really happened during that pivotal moment in New Blood.
“There’s a bit of controversy about that,” Phillips admitted. “The way it was written and the way it was shot was one thing, and the way it was interpreted was another. Dexter killed Logan as he was ducking down from getting shot. He didn’t intend to kill him. In fact, that’s why when Dexter kills Logan and Logan drops, Dexter says ‘sh*t.’ He had no intention of killing him. He ducked down out of the muzzle of Logan’s pistol and it snapped Logan’s neck. And what are you gonna do? You’re gonna get out of there.”
For many viewers, this explanation confirms what they already suspected: that Logan’s death was an accident, not a calculated move. However, some fans had long argued that the writers deliberately showed Dexter breaking the Code by killing an innocent man, thereby justifying Harrison’s decision to kill his father in the finale. According to Phillips, that theory is flat-out wrong.
Fan Theories and Clyde’s Reaction
Beyond the Logan controversy, Phillips also addressed the thriving fan theory culture surrounding Dexter. He confessed to spending more time than he probably should reading fan discussions and wild speculation online, perhaps even articles like this one (hello, Clyde!).
“Anybody can make of anything they want in the show,” Phillips said. “I read a lot of stuff online—probably too much—and everybody has theories about everything. People watch the show so closely, I’m flattered by it. I don’t mind the fact they have opinions and theories. And the fact that there are differences of opinions and there are great ideas coming out of the fans. Some of the stuff I just dismiss as dumb, but other times I see something and think, ‘I wish I thought of that.’”
With Dexter: Resurrection taking place shortly after New Blood, Phillips and his team were clearly aware of the scrutiny surrounding their choices. Their challenge is to honor the past while creating a future where Dexter’s story continues to feel authentic and earned, despite the apparent finality of the last finale.
