Gary Jules Re-Recorded ‘Mad World’ Just for the End Credits of Dexter: Resurrection Episode 9

It’s one of those rare occasions when artists are invited to record a special version of their iconic songs.

Fans of Dexter know that nothing sets the tone for the series quite like Daniel Licht’s legendary Blood Theme—a chilling piece of music that instantly transports longtime viewers back into Dexter Morgan’s dark world. During the original run of Dexter (2006–2013), that theme was sacred, always playing over the end credits.

But in Dexter: Resurrection, things are different. For the third time this season, the revival series has swapped out the Blood Theme for a licensed track—and this time, it’s one of the most haunting songs of the 21st century: “Mad World” by Gary Jules, the widely beloved cover of the 1982 Tears for Fears classic.

A Pattern of Replacements This Season

This musical shake-up began in Episode 3, Backseat Driver, where the credits rolled with “This Is the Beginning” by Marqus Clae. Then, in Episode 5, Murder H*rny, fans were surprised again when “Eat an Eraser” by Princess Goes, fronted by Michael C. Hall himself, replaced the Blood Theme.

Now, in the penultimate episode of Season 1, “Touched by an Ángel” (Episode 9), the choice of music hit especially hard—both emotionally and symbolically.

Why Mad World Resonates

Originally written and performed by Tears for Fears in 1982, Mad World became a global phenomenon nearly two decades later when Gary Jules recorded his slower, stripped-down version in 2001 for the film Donnie Darko. This haunting reinterpretation captured a generation, climbing charts worldwide and embedding itself as one of the most melancholic yet beautiful tracks of the early 2000s.

Even 24 years later, Jules’ version still resonates with listeners across the world. Its lyrics about loneliness, fragility, and the weight of existence feel tailor-made for Dexter’s story.

A New Surprise: Re-Recorded for Dexter

Here’s the twist that only die-hard fans may have caught: the version of “Mad World” used in Dexter: Resurrection is not the original 2001 recording.

In the most recent episode of the Dissecting Dexter podcast, hosted by Gareth Watkins, Dexter: Resurrection executive producer and writer Scott Reynolds revealed that Gary Jules actually re-recorded the song specifically for the series.

“If you listen to it again you’ll hear slight differences and his voice is older now,” Reynolds explained. “It’s a version recorded especially Dexter.”

Joining him on the podcast was David Zayas (Angel Batista), who shared a personal connection: he’s known Gary Jules for years. Zayas admitted he was both surprised and deeply honored to hear the song featured in an episode centered heavily on his character—especially one that concluded with Batista’s tragic death.

Final Thoughts

For fans, knowing that Gary Jules personally revisited his most iconic song just for Dexter: Resurrection makes the moment all the more special. Like the Blood Theme itself, this new rendition will be remembered as one of the show’s most haunting musical choices.
