Eric Stonestreet Breaks Down the Biggest Moments in Dexter: Resurrection Episode 8

Dexter: Final Cut is back with a brand-new episode, featuring the actor behind the elusive Al.

Dexter: Resurrection is now eight episodes deep, with only two episodes left before Season 1 wraps. The tension is at an all-time high, the stakes are unpredictable. That’s exactly why viewers tune in every Saturday for Dexter: Final Cut, the official aftershow that keeps the conversation going long after the credits roll.

Hosted by Jamie Chung, who fans will remember as Molly Park from Dexter: New Blood, the companion series dives deep into each new episode of Dexter: Resurrection. Every week, Chung is joined by a new special guest to dissect shocking twists, character arcs, and key scenes. Between breakdowns, they also keep things light with fan-favorite games like Blood Slider Roulette and more, adding some fun.

This week’s Final Cut guest was none other than Eric Stonestreet, the Emmy-winning actor best known as Cameron Tucker on Modern Family. But in Dexter: Resurrection, Stonestreet takes a very different turn, portraying Al Jolly—better known as the chilling serial killer “Rapunzel.”

Eric Stonestreet on Becoming Al Jolly in Dexter: Resurrection

Before diving into Episode 8, “The Kill Room Where It Happens,” Stonestreet opened up about his journey to landing the role of Al Jolly. A longtime Dexter fan, he admitted that joining the franchise was a dream come true:

“Everyone wanted to get an audition for Dexter. I was just like everyone else, an actor trying to get a part. And then when Clyde and Scott Zoomed me to ask if I wanted to play the Rapunzel Killer, I was honored. I thought, well, you guys have good taste.”

On Sharing the Screen with Dexter’s Star-Studded Cast

One of the most talked-about moments this season was the unforgettable dinner scene, featuring a stacked cast of legends and fan favorites. Stonestreet reflected on working alongside names like Peter Dinklage, Uma Thurman, Neil Patrick Harris, Krysten Ritter, David Dastmalchian, and of course, Michael C. Hall himself:

“Being there, I think I’ve heard Clyde say it—it’s like a frameable call sheet. An eclectic group of legends and talented people all in one room. As an actor, you remind yourself, you’re here for a reason. Something got you into this room. So own it.”

He also shared a heartfelt (and hilarious) note about his friendship with Peter Dinklage:

“Peter, you and I are going to be friends forever. I’m going to stay in your life and mess with you for the rest of my life.”

First Scene Jitters – And a Hug for Dexter

Stonestreet recalled his very first day on set, shooting the elevator scene with Michael C. Hall. As a huge fan of Hall’s work, he admitted to being nervous but decided to just go for it:

“That first scene of mine was literally when I get off the elevator. I didn’t know Michael’s personal boundaries, or Dexter’s boundaries for that matter. But I just went for it—I grabbed him and hugged him. Afterward, they all told me to keep doing it. Michael was awesome—he just rolled with it.”

Escaping Dexter’s Table

In Episode 8, fans were shocked when Al Jolly survived his encounter with Dexter, breaking a long-standing tradition in the series. Stonestreet admitted he asked the showrunners about the rarity of that:

“I was honored that I got away. I asked Scott and Clyde, what kind of rare air am I in? Has any serial killer ever escaped Dexter’s table? Michael was like, I don’t think so. Fans are going to be both pissed and happy—it’s like one little amuse-bouche left hanging, teasing what’s next.”
