Did you catch this quick Easter egg referencing Arthur Mitchell?
We're now three episodes into Dexter: Original Sin, the prequel series that premiered on December 13. Set 15 years before the events of the original pilot, the story takes place in May 1991, as revealed in the latest episode, "Miami Vice."
The show explores Dexter Morgan’s early days as a Miami Metro employee under Tanya Martin, Chief of Forensics. Dexter’s initial experiences at Miami Metro are often awkward as he tries to fit in. However, a few key characters, like Camilla Figg, make his life a little easier.
Camilla, played by Sarah Kinsey, was revealed in the original Dexter series to have been a close family friend of Harry and Doris Morgan. In Episode 2, we see Dexter visiting Camilla’s office at Miami Metro for the first time. As the records supervisor, she was a valuable resource for Dexter in the original series, and here we get to see how their working relationship began.
During this visit, we see 20-year-old Dexter, played by Patrick Gibson, getting a tour of the Miami Metro archive, which is meticulously organized by year, crime type, case reports, court documents, and witness interviews. However, since these records haven’t been digitized yet, Dexter is forced to rely on old-school methods to investigate Tony Ferrer, his second victim-to-be.
Dexter is digging through the archives to determine if Ferrer, a loan shark preying on vulnerable Cuban immigrants, fits the code. While searching, Dexter flips through files related to Rene Carballo and his mother, Carla Carballo—victims of Ferrer. It’s during this moment that a familiar photo appears briefly on-screen, a subtle Easter egg for fans of the original series. The photo, visible at the 30:50 mark of Episode 102, "Kid in a Candy Store," is easy to miss as it flashes by in less than a second.
The photo shows Vicky Noonan, who tragically passed away at the age of 22 in April 1979. Longtime fans may recognize this crime scene photo of her as one of the Trinity Killer’s victims from the 1970s, which was displayed on Dexter's computer screen while he was investigating Trinity's past crimes during the fourth season of the original series. See the actual screenshot from Season 4 below.
According to the case details shown on Dexter’s computer screen in Dexter Season 4, Miami North Central Dispatch received a call about her body being discovered in an apartment at 1578 Glencoe Blvd. in Miami. Officers found Vicky in her bathtub, bound and battered, with a large incision in her left thigh. Her cause of death was determined to be exsanguination due to sharp force trauma to the left femoral artery.
This Easter egg is just one of many expected throughout the 10-episode run of Dexter: Original Sin. In a recent interview, James Martinez, who plays young Angel Batista, teased that "there are so many Easter eggs this season. Fans will have fun spotting them and wondering if their interpretations are correct. It’s a little game for the viewers."
Although this Easter egg hails from a fan-favorite season, Episode 102 has sparked buzz among fans about a potential cameo from Brian Moser—an Easter egg that could be considered even more significant. You can read more about it here!
