The sequel to New Blood has only confirmed Michael C. Hall as the sole returning actor so far.
It is been two months since showrunner Clyde Phillips surprised everyone at the Dexter: Original Sin panel during San Diego Comic-Con 2024 by announcing that Michael C. Hall will reprise his iconic role as Dexter in a brand-new series titled Dexter: Resurrection.
Since that announcement, apart from an interview with Michael C. Hall in Variety, there has been little additional news about the series, which will serve as a sequel to Dexter: New Blood.
What we do know is that Dexter: Resurrection will pick up where New Blood left off, with strong hints that Dexter Morgan is still alive. Production is set to begin in January 2025.
In January 2022, the controversial final episode of Dexter: New Blood left many fans unsatisfied, especially in its closing moments. Angel Batista, a key figure from Dexter's past, made a surprise return in the fifth episode of the limited series, sparking excitement for a potential reunion with Dexter Morgan. The season finale seemed to be building toward that moment, only for the ending to take a sudden turn: Harrison shot Dexter and left Iron Lake for good. At that time, Batista was en route from Miami to Iron Lake, having been tipped off by Angela Bishop that Dexter was alive and possibly the real Bay Harbor Butcher.

Now, two years after the backlash over the finale, Dexter is returning in a new series. But which members of Miami Metro will be coming back as well? To figure that out, let’s first confirm which characters are still alive, using a key clue from episode 110, "Sins of the Father." In the final moments of the episode, we see Batista receiving an email from Angela Bishop, featuring a photo of her with Dexter. Batista's email inbox offers a glimpse into the Miami Metro characters who are still around:
Joey Quinn is still active at Miami Metro, eight years after the original series finale, as he asks Batista about an invitation to Masuka’s bachelor party—yes, Masuka is finally getting married. Further down, there’s a message from "Sergeant Tom." It’s unlikely this is Tom Matthews, who was a deputy chief by the end of the original series.
With this in mind, let’s dive into the five (living) Miami Metro characters most likely to return in the next chapter of the Dexter franchise!
1. Angel Batista
Although there hasn't been any official confirmation from the actor or the network, Angel Batista—one of the show's most beloved characters, portrayed by David Zayas—is widely expected to return. Since Dexter: Resurrection picks up where Dexter: New Blood left off, fans may finally get the long-awaited showdown between Batista and Dexter!
2. Vince Masuka
Another character highly likely to return in this new installment of Dexter is none other than Vince Masuka, portrayed by C.S. Lee. It will be interesting to see if his wedding plans are disrupted by the shocking revelation that Dexter, presumed dead for years, is alive and once again suspected of being the Bay Harbor Butcher.
In August, Lee sparked fan speculation by sharing an image on Instagram featuring the Paramount+ logo, leading many to believe he had met with the network to discuss his return in the new Dexter series. While nothing has been confirmed, the buzz among fans was strong that day.
3. Tom Matthews
The next character in line with high chances of coming back is Tom Matthews. While he may no longer be with Miami Metro, possibly retired due to his age, his return would be intriguing. Over the years, there have been theories suggesting that Matthews knew more about Dexter's true identity than he let on. Given his close friendship with Harry Morgan, it's possible he had deeper insights into Dexter’s dark side.
4. Joseph Quinn
Speaking of those who may know more about Dexter’s dark secrets, Joey Quinn is another character likely to return in Dexter: Resurrection. The original series finale in 2013 left Quinn heartbroken over Deb's condition. Over the years, fans have speculated that Quinn knew the truth about Dexter but chose to turn a blind eye, pretending not to know anything.
5. Angie Miller
Another character that might return, although the chances are quite low, is Angie Miller. Actress Dana L. Wilson joined the cast of Dexter as a minor character at Miami Metro in Season 7 and her character Angie was promoted to Sergeant in the final season. However, due to her relatively lackluster role in the series, she is barely remembered by fans. As a result, while there is a possibility of her return in Dexter: Resurrection, it remains unlikely.
We'll soon find out which characters from the original series will return for Dexter: Resurrection. Official updates are on the way, so stay tuned!
