Michael C. Hall Says Dexter Morgan Still Has an Appetite for Love, but There's a Problem

According to Michael C. Hall, Dexter has a few requirements before he can consider entering a new relationship in Dexter: Resurrection Season 2.

Although Dexter Morgan was something of a heartthrob in the OG series, attracting a lot of gorgeous women along the way, the last time we saw him in an actual romantic relationship was in Dexter: New Blood. And now that we've watched the Season 2 premiere of Dexter: Resurrection, there isn't much reason to believe his love life has changed.

Three years have passed since the events of Season 1, and Dexter is still single. The season premiere, titled "Risky Business," didn't reveal whether he had any romantic adventures during that time. However, that doesn't mean there won't be any romantic interests for him in this new chapter.

His flirtation with Krysten Ritter's Mia Lapierre, was hard to miss in the two episodes they actually shared in Season 1. The chemistry was definitely there, but things never went anywhere after Mia revealed her true colors. So, could there be another chance for romance in Season 2?

Michael C. Hall Says Dexter Still Has an Appetite for Love

As the premiere made clear, Dexter Morgan is going through a midlife crisis. And, as Harry suggested during the episode, men sometimes look for younger women when trying to deal with that kind of... personal crisis. But is a new romance actually on the cards for Dexter?

Michael C. Hall was recently asked about the possibility during a short interview with LRM Online, and his answer suggests that Dexter hasn't completely closed himself off to love.

"I don't know. As far as his openness to a romantic relationship, I think that appetite probably does exist somewhere in Dexter. I think he's been burned by that in the past."

Hall went on to explain that a relationship with Dexter would require someone who could accept him for who he is and understand what comes with being in his life.

"And, that would require a potential other person making room for him and understanding a great deal and being on his side. And I don't know if that's something he'll find or not."

When it comes to love in a non-romantic sense, Hall actually was much more certain. For Dexter, that kind of love is closely tied to his son, Harrison: "I think the primary love relationship in his life is one in which he's willing the good for his son."

Dexter Has Really Been Burned by Love Before

Hall isn't wrong about Dexter having a difficult history when it comes to romance. The most recent example is Angela Bishop, played by Julia Jones, who went from being Dexter's girlfriend to the woman who arrested him and nearly exposed him as the Bay Harbor Butcher.

But Angela is actually far from the only example. Lila, Hannah, and even Lumen, who eventually left Dex after no longer feeling connected to the "darkness" that brought them together, all became part of his complicated romantic history.

Still, Hall's (very) careful wording doesn't necessarily mean Season 2 will avoid exploring Dexter's love life. In fact, there are already two women who could play an important role in that part of his story: Charley Brown and Mia Lapierre.

Charley already knows exactly who Dexter is, and that alone could make her an interesting romantic possibility. With hints suggesting that she could now be on Dexter's side and help him take down serial killers, the two could grow closer as the season progresses. Of course, whether that connection could turn into something romantic remains to be seen.

Then there's Mia. The two have unfinished business from Season 1, and their attraction never had the chance to develop into anything more. They definitely seemed interested in each other, especially during their brief interactions, so it wouldn't be surprising to see that "spark" return in Season 2.

A potential love triangle involving Dexter, Mia, and Charley could make things even more dangerous and intriguing, especially considering that one of them (Charley) knows more about Dexter than most people ever will, while the other (Mia) would actually be fascinated by the truth.

Could Dexter finally find romance again, and which of these two women would be the better match for him at this point in his life? Time will tell.
