It's been 20 years since audiences first met Dexter Morgan, and over that time, the character has gone through many personal changes. Despite all the ups and downs we've witnessed across the seasons, however, one thing remains the same: Dexter is still Dexter. But that doesn't mean his needs always stay the same.
And this is where things get especially interesting in Dexter: Resurrection Season 2. The recent trailer released by Paramount+ hinted that our favorite antihero could be going through a midlife crisis. But... there's actually more to it than that.
In a recent interview following New York Comic Con (NYCC), Michael C. Hall opened up about the three things Dexter Morgan will desire the most in the upcoming season, and all three start with the letter A.
What Does Dexter Crave in Season 2?
During the NYCC panel, journalist Josh Horowitz asked Hall to describe Dexter Morgan in Season 2. The actor's answer was actually the phrase: "look at me." However, in a separate interview with CritiX after the panel, Hall went a step further, revealing exactly what he meant by that phrase.
According to the actor, Dexter is experiencing a new side of himself in the second season, one that leaves him craving attention, acknowledgment, and appreciation. While these desires have appeared in previous seasons, Hall explained that this time, they're emerging in a way audiences haven't seen before.
All three are closely connected to Dexter's complicated identity and the way he sees himself. Throughout the years, he's killed countless murderers, often believing his actions have saved innocent lives. Now, as he becomes more human and forms deeper connections with the people around him, he actually seems to want something more in return. And that is recognition and acceptance.
Whether this growing need is simply a byproduct of his midlife crisis or is being triggered by some of the people he encounters in Season 2 remains to be seen. We'll have to wait until the new episodes arrive to find out.
Michael C. Hall Still Can't Quite Figure Out Dexter Morgan
During the same interview, Hall elaborated on Dexter's changing desires, explaining that becoming more human also means developing more relatable needs. Along with being able to form a loving relationship with Harrison, Dexter now wants to receive credit for his actions, something that could be particularly dangerous for someone who has spent years hiding his true identity.
Hall also admitted that he still finds Dexter a fascinating and challenging character to play, partly because he hasn't entirely figured him out, even after two decades.
The actor reflected on the contradiction at the heart of Dexter Morgan, which actually is his ability to give in to his murderous urges while still building genuine relationships and maintaining a seemingly ordinary life. When audiences first met Dexter, he had separated his dark side from everything else. His identity as a killer remained untouched, while the rest of his life was largely a carefully constructed act designed to support that hidden side of himself.
And it's that contradiction that continues to make Dexter such a fascinating character. He's a serial killer who has spent much of his life trying to keep his darker instincts separate from his relationships, but the boundaries between those two sides of himself have become increasingly complicated over the years.
Now, with Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 bringing him into another stage of his life, his desire for attention, acknowledgment, and appreciation could create new challenges for the character. After all, wanting credit for what he does is something very dangerous for a person who has spent so long hiding his true self.
