The second season of Dexter: Resurrection is set to bring back Eric Stonestreet as Al Walker, aka Rapunzel. And just like his character in Season 1, who managed to escape Dexter's kill table, his return announcement was also saved for last.
The news was revealed during New York Comic Con, confirming that Rapunzel is back in the game. As fans of Dexter know, the show doesn't like to leave loose ends, and this time, we also learned exactly which episode Stonestreet will appear in. But thanks to a new interview with the actor, we now have another intriguing detail: what triggers Al's return to Dexter's radar.
During an interview with Liam Crowley, Stonestreet teased his return as Al Walker, hinting that some time has actually passed since we last saw the character. "It's been a bit," the actor explained, before carefully teasing what fans can expect without giving too much away.
Stonestreet revealed that Al hasn't given up his... unique approach to killing, and that his continued crimes eventually bring him back into Dexter's orbit.
"It's been a bit and you find out that Al has not stopped his unique brand of killing and that doesn't sit well with Dexter and Dexter falls back on what Dexter does and attempts to locate me. And whether he finds me and is successful, that's going to be up to the audience to figure out or watch and see."
His comments actually offer an interesting clue about how Rapunzel's storyline will unfold in Season 2, especially following the time jump between the two seasons.
How Dexter Might Find Rapunzel After the Time Jump
Based on Stonestreet's comments, Dexter might not have spent the months following Leon Prater's downfall actively searching for Al. Instead, it could be Rapunzel's return to killing that puts him back on Dexter's radar.
Al's signature method of targeting women with ponytails and cutting their hair as trophies is distinctive enough to attract attention. If his latest crimes make the news, that could give Dexter a new lead and a reason to track him down.
Of course, this is only one possible interpretation of the actor's comments. Stonestreet doesn't reveal exactly how Dexter learns about Al's latest crimes or whether he ultimately manages to find him, although a recently released promotional photo confirms the latter. Still, his remarks suggest that Rapunzel's twisted urges could be the key to setting their next encounter in motion.
Could Rapunzel Escape Dexter Again?
When Al Walker was introduced in Season 1, he actually seemed like the kind of serial killer Dexter would deal with relatively early and easy. Instead, Rapunzel became the only one of the members of Leon Prater's team of killers who managed to survive, much to the surprise of many viewers.
Now, with Stonestreet returning for Season 2, the question is whether Dexter will finally catch up with him. There's no guarantee that Rapunzel's story will end differently this time. Given that he already managed to escape Dexter once, another escape isn't out of the question. We'll have to wait and see whether Dexter succeeds in tracking him down this time.
