The promotional campaign for Dexter: Resurrection continues to reach new levels, and American audiences have been seeing some of it in recent weeks, with banners and posters appearing in public places across various US cities. But while these are the more traditional forms of promotion, moviegoers are in for a very different kind of surprise.
A new cinema-exclusive promo is playing in theaters across countries where Paramount+ is available, featuring never-before-seen footage filmed specifically to be shown before a movie begins. And while the idea might sound... fairly straightforward at first, there's a very interesting twist that makes this one special.
The promo features Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan preparing a kill room. The camera remains completely still as our favorite antihero begins unrolling a duct tape, with the entire room already covered in plastic sheets.
The actual result is a unique perspective, making it seem as though we're watching Dexter at... "work from the point of view of someone who has stumbled upon his preparations.
Dexter Morgan Has a Message for Moviegoers
But the most interesting part isn't what we see. It's what we hear.
Dexter's inner monologue has been recorded specifically for this promo, with the character speaking directly to the people sitting in the theater and waiting for their movie to begin. Here's what he says:
"I'm telling you. This monster inside me can take over everything. Count yourself lucky that you can come here in the dark."
As the screen suddenly goes dark, the kill room appears on screen again, but Dexter is actually nowhere to be seen. His monologue continues, becoming even more personal as he addresses the audience:
"Eat your popcorn, drink your soda, be entertained as you experience this urge, and then, when it's finished, you can walk out into the light."
The promo then cuts to a quick montage of footage from the upcoming season, most of which will look familiar to everyone who have already watched the official full trailer.
I had a Dexter Resurrection S2 promo in the cinema! @DexterDaily missed a few seconds because I didn’t know they were doing promos like this! #DexterResurrection https://t.co/hnSmVqVTdK

Luckily, one of our Dexter Daily readers, Josh, happened to be at a local cinema somewhere in the United Kingdom when the promo appeared. He managed to pull out his phone and record it as quickly as possible, which is very impressive since the promo played without any warning.
What actually makes this campaign so interesting is the way it plays with the fourth wall, something Dex has used many times throughout the franchise. Instead of simply showing moviegoers another trailer, it uses Dexter's own voice addressing them as they sit in the dark.
With the second season on the way, this is another example of how the Resurrection's promotional campaign is finding creative and clever ways to reach its audience.
