Is Paramount+ testing fan interest in Dexter: Original Sin's return and the shelved Trinity prequel?
There was a time, just three years ago, when Showtime (and Paramount+) had much bigger plans for the Dexter franchise.
Back in 2023, the network actually announced an ambitious expansion that included three different series. Alongside the Harrison spinoff (which was scrapped because of Dexter: Resurrection), the plan also featured Dexter: Original Sin, a prequel following a young Dexter Morgan, and another prequel centered on Arthur Mitchell, the Trinity Killer.
Out of those projects, only Original Sin made it to the screen, and sadly it lasted just one season. The Trinity prequel, despite reportedly having the scripts of Season 1 completed, was put on the shelf before production ever began.
To this day, the project actually remains in limbo. And unlike Dexter: Original Sin, whose cancellation was publicly confirmed by Paramount's new leadership last August, the Trinity prequel has never officially had its fate addressed.
Paramount also made it clear at the time that Dexter: Resurrection would be the only Dexter series moving forward. But... television strategies change all the time, especially when audience demand changes.
Two Unrelated Posts, One Very Interesting Coincidence
For months, there was complete silence surrounding both Original Sin and the Trinity prequel. Then, on Saturday, July 25, that silence was suddenly broken by two unrelated posts that appeared on the very same day.
The first actually came from Collider. As we covered in a previous Dexter Daily article, its headline was so misleading that many fans initially believed Dexter: Original Sin had finally been renewed for Season 2.
The second came from the Instagram account TV Moments, which has more than 800,000 followers. The account claimed that Paramount was "reportedly" reviving the shelved Trinity Killer prequel, giving new life to a project that many fans assumed was dead.
The problem? Paramount has never announced any such decision. Despite that, the Instagram post gained tens of thousands of likes and hundreds of comments in a short amount of time, with many fans celebrating what they believed was... real news!
Coincidence... or Something More?
Honestly, the timing is difficult to ignore. Two completely different platforms published misleading stories about two different shelved Dexter projects on the exact same day after months of silence.
Collider and its sister sites have built a reputation over the years for publishing... attention-grabbing headlines, but even by its standards, this one actually stood out because it convinced many readers that Original Sin had been renewed before they even opened the article.
Could these stories have unintentionally (or perhaps even intentionally) given Paramount a chance to measure fan interest in both projects? It may sound like a stretch, and it absolutely could be. But quietly testing audience interest before committing to expensive productions is not something unusual in the entertainment industry.
Fans Actually Showed Their Feelings
Whether intentional or not, both of these stories managed to cause exactly the reaction you would expect if someone wanted to... measure fan demand.
The Collider headline reignited frustration over Dexter: Original Sin's cancellation, with many fans once again expressing how badly they want Season 2. Meanwhile, the Instagram post caused excitement over the Trinity prequel while also starting conversations about which project fans would rather see happen the most.
Based on the reaction so far, the one thing fans actually care about the most is Dexter: Original Sin, and there is also a lot of curiosity surrounding the Trinity prequel.
Paramount's Strategy Could Still Change
The timing is also interesting because Paramount itself remains in a period of uncertainty. Based on multiple reports, the company has actually agreed to delay closing its porposed merger with Warner Bros. Discovery until either ongoing legal challenges are resolved or June 1, 2027.
Regardless of what ends up happening with the merger, it has become obvious over the past few years that expanding successful franchises has worked extremely well for Paramount.
Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone universe has grown into multiple successful series, including 1883, 1923, The Madison, Marshals, and Dutton Ranch. Together, they have helped attract millions of subscribers and actually turned one hit show into one of the company's biggest franchises.
Given that Dexter was, and still is Showtime's flagship series for years, it's definitely not hard to imagine Paramount eventually revisiting its earlier expansion plans.
Could Both Projects Still Return?
At this point, there is no evidence that Paramount has changed course. Neither Dexter: Original Sin Season 2 nor the Trinity prequel has been announced. Still, the events of July 25 make for an interesting coincidence.
Whether those stories were only the result of bad reporting or something that indirectly helped gauge fan interest, they actually proved that Dexter fans still want more.
Of course, that doesn't mean either project is coming back. But if Paramount was ever looking for proof that audiences haven't moved on, the response over the past few days certainly provided it!
