Trinity Killer Prequel Update: Dexter Creators Say Scripts Are ‘Beautifully Written’ and Ready

The prequel exploring Arthur Mitchell's early years remains a possibility.

It’s been over two years since Showtime first revealed plans to expand the Dexter universe with a slate of prequel series. The conversations began after the success of Dexter: New Blood in 2022, but it wasn’t until February 2023 that official announcements started to roll out. Since then, only one of those prequels has made it to the screen — Dexter: Original Sin, which recently concluded its first season with a second season already in the works.

However, another highly anticipated prequel is still waiting in the wings: the origin story of the infamous Trinity Killer.

In a recent interview with Collider, longtime Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips and writer Scott Reynolds shared an exciting but cautious update on the status of the Trinity Killer prequel series. With Dexter: Resurrection now streaming, the fate of this dark origin story may soon be decided.

According to Phillips, the Trinity prequel is already complete — on paper. “It’s completely written,” he confirmed. “John Lithgow has agreed to do the voiceover narration, but it’s not picked up yet.”

John Lithgow, a good friend of Clyde Phillips and an Emmy winner for his unforgettable portrayal of Arthur Mitchell in Dexter Season 4, is on board to narrate the series. A younger actor would take on the role of young Arthur, but Lithgow’s return (even in voice form) adds a thrilling connection to the original.

What’s Holding It Back?

So what’s stopping the Trinity prequel from becoming reality?

Phillips made it clear: everything hinges on the success of Dexter: Resurrection. “If Resurrection does well,” he explained, “I’m hopeful Chris McCarthy and the Paramount Global team will want to further expand the Dexterverse.”

Scott Reynolds echoed that sentiment, describing the Trinity prequel as “a hell of a good story.” Phillips added: “It’s not been greenlit, but it’s beautifully written. All 10 scripts are ready to go.”

Will It Be a Limited Series or Something More?

While many details remain under wraps, one major question still looms: will the Trinity prequel be a limited miniseries or a multi-season story?

As of now, nothing is confirmed. But with 10 fully written episodes, a beloved actor attached, and the creative team behind Dexter passionate about the project, fans have reason to be hopeful.

The deciding factor? Viewership numbers.

With the first two episodes of Dexter: Resurrection now streaming, the next few weeks will be critical. Official ratings and streaming stats are expected soon, and they could make or break the future of the Trinity Killer prequel.
