Dexter: Resurrection Reveals the New York Ripper’s Face Ahead of Season 2 — Why Fans Say It’s a Big Mistake

Following the announcement, many fans expressed frustration over the actor reveal.

After months of silence surrounding Dexter: Resurrection Season 2, the official Dexter social media accounts finally delivered an update fans had been waiting for. And of course, it was a big one: the man set to portray one of the most elusive serial killers in Dexter history, the New York Ripper.

The reveal confirmed that 79-year-old actor Brian Cox will take on the role of the infamous killer who terrorized New York City decades ago. The announcement came via a short vertical video from inside a NY subway station, matching the style used ahead of Season 1 back in early 2025.

While the casting finally answers one of the show’s biggest mysteries and gives us some long-awaited knowledge, the reaction hasn’t been entirely positive. In fact, a surprisingly large number of viewers expressed frustration almost immediately.

As the casting news spread, comment sections were actually filled with mixed reactions, with some fans even calling the decision to reveal the face of such an important character ahead of the season a big mistake.

The criticism definitely comes down to timing. Many fans believe the identity of the New York Ripper should have remained a secret until it was unveiled within the second season itself, rather than through social media. For them, this early reveal took away what could have been an amazing moment on-screen. Some people even went as far as unfollowing accounts that shared the news, hoping to avoid similar spoilers moving forward.

Among those who actually spoke out was actor Alex Vincent, best known for playing Andy in the original Chucky films and TV series. Commenting on both Dexter Daily and official Dexter posts, he criticized the decision to reveal not just the actor, but also the character itself. “Really. I guess likes are more important than the show. I’m just the anti-spoiler. Of course I’m still going to watch. I would have preferred they announce his involvement, not the character… which was a cliffhanger,” he wrote on Instagram.

A day after the announcement, executive producer and director Marcos Siega addressed the backlash. Responding under a new video from BingeTown TV, he actually acknowledged the complaints but also gave a great explanation that makes sense.

According to Siega, once Brian Cox appeared on set in New York, the secret would have been impossible to keep under wraps. He also reassured fans by adding that there are still “plenty of surprises coming in the episodes.”

Despite those reactions, Brian Cox’s casting has largelry been welcomed by the broader fanbase, and confirmed that the teased “BC” initials from earlier this week, were about him, and not Bryan Cranston as many people thought and hoped for.

In the end, Cox brings decades of experience to the role, with a career actually spanning more than 50 years, making him a yet another exceptional addition to the Dexter saga!
