This latest rumor has strongly caught fans’ attention, but is it actually true?
If there is one pop culture phenomenon that has kept fans obsessed for many years now, it’s Grand Theft Auto 6. The GTA franchise has reached a level of cultural nostalgia that actually spans multiple generations, and ever since GTA 5 launched back in 2013, the series has only grown bigger, and more popular than anyone could have imagined.
With the next installment, Rockstar Games is taking players back to familiar territory. GTA 6 returns to Vice City, the franchise’s stand-in for real-life Miami. This time, though, the scope is far more ambitious. Unlike the beloved and timeless 2002 classic that stayed mostly within the city limits, GTA 6 actually expands across an entire state inspired by Florida, known in-game as Leonida, promising a much broader and more immersive open world.
That setting was officially confirmed two years ago when the game’s first trailer dropped and instantly broke the internet. After several delays that tested fans’ patience, GTA 6 is now scheduled to release on November 19, 2026, which means it’s still under a year away. While the wait has really frustrated many of us, long development cycles are honestly nothing new for Rockstar, and they usually result in games that actually redefine the industry.
As fans count down the days or hope for a second trailer, discussions continue to swirl around just how realistic and detailed GTA 6 will be at launch. But there’s a specific group of fans who are even more excited than most, and that excitement is tied directly to the game’s Miami-inspired location. Those fans are, of course, Dexter fans, who are already speculating about possible references and Easter eggs connected to the iconic Showtime series.
That speculation isn’t entirely baseless. GTA 5 famously included many subtle nods to Dexter, showing that Rockstar is at least aware of the show’s cultural impact. For longtime fans, that history alone has been enough to fuel hope that GTA 6 could actually go even further.
Over the past couple of days, that excitement escalated dramatically after a rumor began circulating online. A post shared on Instagram claimed that a Rockstar Games developer had said Dexter would play a “major role” in the early parts of GTA 6’s story. But it was another post that went viral which suggested that protagonists Jason and Lucia would be able to purchase Dexter Morgan’s apartment, with the building allegedly featured in the game.
Although the original post came from a very small GTA-focused account with minimal engagement, the rumor exploded after being picked up and reshared by a Dexter fan account with tens of throusands of followers. That post racked up more than 72,000 likes and hundreds of comments, with many fans fully convinced the information was...legitimate!
Unfortunately for those hoping for a crossover, the rumor simply isn’t true. After a research we did online, there is no actual evidence that any Rockstar Games developer made such statements, and the story appears to have been fabricated just to gain attention. And once it was amplified by a larger fan account, it...took on a life of its own.
While the idea is not completely unrealistic, given GTA 6’s Miami setting and the fact that Dexter’s 20th anniversary aligns closely with the game’s release window, there is currently no official confirmation of any collaboration. In fact, executive producer and showrunner Clyde Phillips recently dismissed similar rumors outright, stating that it was the first time he had even heard of such a claim.
So for now, fans will have to actually temper their expectations. As amazing as the idea of major Dexter-themed missions or owning Dexter’s apartment in GTA 6 might be, nothing has been really confirmed. That said, Rockstar is known for hiding clever references in plain sight, and if any Dexter Easter eggs do make it into the game (which is guaranteed if you ask us), players will have to discover them the old-fashioned way, by exploring Leonida for themselves!
