David Dastmalchian Discusses All the Twists and Turns in Dexter: Resurrection Episode 6

Dexter: Final Cut returns with another episode, featuring the talented actor behind Gareth as today’s special guest!

We’ve officially crossed the halfway point of Dexter: Resurrection, and the official aftershow for the sequel series is back for its fifth consecutive week. Hosted by Dexter: New Blood alum Jamie Chung, Dexter: Final Cut is the must-watch companion series on YouTube, bringing fans behind-the-scenes insights and exclusive interviews with cast members and creatives from the Dexter universe.

This week’s episode of Final Cu — filmed on July 10, just a day after the show’s NYC premiere — was as special as the Resurrection episode it covered — the tense, twisted, and electrifying “Cats & Mouse.” The featured guest was none other than David Dastmalchian, the actor behind Gareth, a.k.a. the Gemini Killer. Considering Gareth’s shocking on-screen twist, it’s no surprise the man who brought him to life took center stage in the aftershow.

Dastmalchian is no stranger to unforgettable roles — his career spans decades across multiple blockbuster franchises — but this episode of Dexter: Resurrection was unique. Gareth’s turn delivered a moment unlike anything fans had ever seen in the series before.

While much of the conversation centered on episode commentary and behind-the-scenes details, Dastmalchian opened up about something deeply personal: how he first became a Dexter fan during one of the most difficult chapters of his life in the late 2000s.

“I was a theater actor in Chicago,” he recalled. “Unfortunately — or actually, fortunately — I had a near-fatal struggle with addiction. I stepped away from acting for years to focus on my mental health, recovery, and learning how to live life clean and sober. When I finally returned to normal life, I was doing some theater, working a regular job, and writing a lot… and that’s when Dexter came into my life.”

Without cable at the time, Dastmalchian would rent the show on DVD, quickly becoming hooked.

“Dexter checked all the boxes for me — an incredible central performance, amazing supporting cast, fantastic writing, horror, psychological thrills, and even elements of comedy. Over the years, it stayed addictive… and then I actually got to be part of it. Who knew? I’m just so grateful.”

He also expressed heartfelt appreciation for the creative team behind Dexter: Resurrection:

“It’s a really special feeling. I don’t take it for granted that people like Clyde Phillips and Scott Reynolds, with their incredible team of writers, built this world and decided David Dastmalchian is the guy for Gareth. There’s a part of me that wonders, ‘What does that say about me?’ But hey — if the shoe fits, if the glove fits…”
