In a recent Variety interview at SDCC, the cast delved into all things Dexter: Resurrection.
On July 25, the cast of Dexter: Resurrection brought the heat to San Diego Comic-Con, energizing the annual convention with a packed day of activations, interviews, and an unforgettable panel. Fans have supported SDCC for decades, and this year, the highly anticipated Dexter sequel series had one of the most buzzworthy presences on the floor.
The spotlight was firmly on the Dexter: Resurrection panel, held at the iconic Ballroom 20, which sent fans into a frenzy. The panel featured six standout stars from the show: Michael C. Hall (Dexter Morgan), David Zayas (Angel Batista), Krysten Ritter (Mia Lapierre), James Remar (Harry Morgan), Jack Alcott (Harrison Morgan), and David Dastmalchian (Gareth). Their collective presence reignited excitement for the return of TV’s favorite complex antihero.
A Special Reunion at the Variety Studio
During their sit-down at the Variety Studio—the very same location where Michael C. Hall had cryptically hinted one year earlier that “it’s very cold out there,” teasing Dexter’s possible survival—each cast member offered heartfelt insights into the upcoming season and their return to the franchise.
The conversation fittingly began with James Remar, who is reprising his role as Harry Morgan after a 12-year absence.
He reflected on the emotional gravity of returning, saying it felt almost indescribable. “It’s an amazing experience,” he shared. “Coming back to play an iconic role I first portrayed nearly twenty years ago—one that’s still alive in fans’ hearts—is surreal. To be on set again with Michael, and now with these talented new cast members... I literally got goosebumps.”
Three Generations of Morgans
The conversation soon turned to the unique dynamic of having three generations of Morgans on the show.
Michael C. Hall responded with his signature dry wit and depth, noting that while all three—Dexter, Harry, and Harrison—do appear on screen, there’s a layered complexity. “All three of us show up, at least on camera,” he said, adding thoughtfully, “But I don’t know if Harrison is aware that Harry is there in my head.”
David Zayas on Batista’s Return
For David Zayas, returning to the role of Angel Batista after all these years was both nostalgic and invigorating. “At first, I wasn’t sure,” he admitted. “It’s been a long time. But the moment I stepped on set, it was like flipping a switch—I was back in. There’s something special about playing a character for so long. You can really go deep. And being surrounded by these amazing people just made it all the more meaningful.”
Zayas also touched on Batista’s evolving relationship with Harrison, explaining, “He’s protective, but also very curious. His sister babysat Harrison when he was just a baby—I remember him as a baby. So when his name comes up now, it’s deeply personal. There’s so much to explore there.”
Jack Alcott on Harrison’s Emotional Journey
Jack Alcott, who plays Dexter’s conflicted son Harrison, opened up about the emotional weight of discovering that his father is still alive.
“It means a lot of things,” he said. “At the core of it, I think it means Harrison is no longer alone. Despite all the pain and confusion, Dexter was the one person who truly understood him. Harrison had to say goodbye when he pulled that trigger. But now, with Dexter back, a door opens—finally giving him someone to share that heavy emotional load with.”
Dexter’s Perspective on Forgiveness and Accountability
When asked how Dexter feels about Harrison shooting him in the finale of Dexter: New Blood, Michael C. Hall offered a profound perspective.
“It absolutely had an effect—but maybe not a negative one,” he said. “If Dexter’s being honest, he backed Harrison into a corner. He inspired that moment as much as Harrison acted on it. In a way, they shot him together. And now, Dexter’s ready to take responsibility for that... maybe even absolve Harrison of the guilt he’s been carrying.”
