The sequel brings back Original Sin writers to shape the future of Dexter Morgan.
Dexter: Resurrection—the highly anticipated sequel to Dexter: New Blood—is now entering its final weeks of filming. As production nears completion, Showtime is doubling down on narrative continuity by bringing back the core writing team from Dexter: Original Sin to shape the next chapter in the evolution of America’s favorite code-driven serial killer.
This bold creative crossover between prequel and sequel signals a major commitment to storytelling cohesion. By entrusting both Dexter’s origins and his future to the same creative minds, fans can look forward to a seamless, emotionally resonant continuation of the saga they’ve followed for nearly two decades.
A Unified Vision: Why the Returning Writers Matter
Although it's still under wraps which writers are assigned to specific episodes of Dexter: Resurrection, the decision to retain the Original Sin writing team signals a commitment to storytelling consistency, character development, and tonal fidelity.
Showrunner Clyde Phillips, a long-time Dexter architect, has shared in interviews that Michael C. Hall himself initiated the conversation about continuing the character’s story. After Hall reached out, Phillips and his creative team developed a pitch for the sequel, which was later greenlit by Showtime and Paramount.
Intriguingly, development for Dexter: Resurrection began while Dexter: Original Sin was still in production. “All while shooting Original Sin, we were writing Resurrection,” Phillips confirmed. Despite the overlapping timelines, he clarified that the two series are “separate entities”—connected primarily through Dexter Morgan himself.
Confirmed Writers for Dexter: Resurrection
The writing team for the upcoming 10-episode first season of Dexter: Resurrection includes many familiar names from Original Sin. Confirmed writers include:
- Clyde Phillips (Showrunner)
- Scott Reynolds
- Tanner Bean
- Alexandra Franklin
- Katrina Mathewson
- Marc Muszynski
- Mary Leah Sutton
- Nick Zayas
Joining this experienced team is Matt Venne, a fresh voice within the Dexter franchise. His addition hints at new ideas and creative angles while still honoring the established lore.
It’s currently unconfirmed whether Original Sin writers Safura Fadavi (Episode 3) and Terry Huang (Episode 6) will return, though the majority of the writing team remains intact.
From Writers' Strike to Dexter's Rebirth
The return of Dexter comes in the wake of the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike, which lasted 148 days and ended in September of that year. Soon after, Michael C. Hall expressed renewed interest in reprising the role, igniting momentum that brought together Clyde Phillips and much of the original creative team.
This post-strike resurgence allowed Showtime to double down on one of its most iconic characters, setting the stage for a new era of storytelling that bridges the past and future of Dexter Morgan.
With Dexter: Resurrection in the final stages of production ahead of its July 11 premiere, and Original Sin Season 2 currently in script development, there’s never been a better time to be a Dexter fan!
