Martinez described working on Dexter: Original Sin as "the most fun" he’s ever had on a set.
The "Dexter-verse" continues to captivate audiences with its latest series, Dexter: Original Sin. The most recent episode, titled "The Joy of Killing," premiered on Paramount+ with Showtime, marking the official midway point of the season.
Saturdays are now synonymous with new episodes of Dexter: Final Cut, the official Showtime after-show for Dexter: Original Sin. This week, the spotlight was on actor James Martinez, who has impressed fans with his striking resemblance to the original Batista actor, David Zayas. Hosted by Dexter: New Blood alum Jamie Chung, the duo delved into Batista’s iconic style, moral complexities, and his journey through an increasingly dark world.
James Martinez on Becoming Batista
In an exclusive interview, James Martinez shared insights into his transformation into the beloved character Angel Batista:
On Landing the Role
“Actually, when I got to the audition, my agent even said, ‘Look, you don’t look like this guy, but it’s all about the acting. Let’s give it a try.’ At the time, I didn’t see the resemblance either. But after studying footage, working on the head movements, and nailing the vocal cadence, it all came together. The work paid off.”
On Joining the Dexter Family
“It all happened so quickly. Suddenly, I’m on set, surrounded by these iconic characters, and stepping into this 90s-inspired environment with big, bulky computers. At first, I was nervous. These are huge shoes to fill.”
David Zayas’s Advice
Before stepping into the role, Martinez sought guidance from David Zayas, the original Batista:
“I went to a theater fundraiser where I knew David would be. I introduced myself, and he gave me a big bear hug. The best advice he gave me was, ‘Angel doesn’t have a drop of cynicism in him.’ That stuck with me. It became my guiding principle for the character—just full of positivity and hope.”
Working with the Star-Studded Cast
Martinez reflected on collaborating with the show’s stellar ensemble, including Patrick Dempsey, Christina Milian, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Christian Slater:
“It was overwhelming at first. I took my time getting to know everyone individually. Working with Christian Slater, who’s a legend from our generation, was surreal. I didn’t even know how to approach him at first. But we connected over our New York roots and family life. Everyone had their unique process. For example, Paddy [Patrick Gibson] would listen to Michael C. Hall as part of his preparation. We all supported each other in bringing these established characters to life.”
Behind the Scenes Fun
Martinez also shared a lighter side of his experience:
“Alex helped me break out of my shell. He introduced me to TikTok, and it really loosened me up. The camaraderie on set made this one of the most enjoyable projects I’ve ever worked on.”
