Go behind-the-scenes for a special look at the series premiere.
Showtime has unveiled a brand-new behind-the-scenes featurette for the premiere episode of Dexter: Original Sin, titled "And in the Beginning...".
The video takes fans deeper into the making of Episode 101, showcasing never-before-seen footage from filming locations in Los Angeles and Miami. It also features exclusive insights from cast members Patrick Gibson, Christian Slater, Alex Shimizu, and producers Clyde Phillips and Scott Reynolds as they reflect on recreating the world of Dexter and the prequel’s pivotal first episode.
Patrick Gibson on Playing Young Dexter
Gibson, who plays a young Dexter Morgan, shared his excitement about stepping into such an iconic role:
"The iconic spin—that was definitely a pinch-me moment. I discovered those chairs get higher and lower the more you spin, so I was like, 'Wait, what's going on here?' Getting to explore Dexter's first kill and recreate that iconic kill room was pretty incredible. Stepping into a set you’ve seen on TV is surreal—it’s wild."
Gibson also highlighted the intricate fight choreography and the dedication of stunt coordinator Shauna Duggan, calling the experience both challenging and fun:
"We had more time to choreograph the fight, which was really fun. Shauna is just unbelievable—she really gets you into it."
Scott Reynolds on Dexter’s First Kill
Executive producer Scott Reynolds offered a fascinating look at Dexter's earliest kill and the meticulous process behind it:
"I loved the kill of Nurse Mary. Normally, we don’t see much of Dexter setting things up—who wants to watch someone putting up plastic? But here, you see everything. It’s part of the code: leave nothing behind. A lot of that overkill is because Dexter has been thinking about this for so long."
Reynolds also praised Christian Slater’s performance as Harry Morgan:
"When casting suggested Christian Slater, we were like, ‘Absolutely.’ He steps into James Remar’s shoes perfectly, and watching Christian and Dempsey together is amazing—they’re both icons."
Clyde Phillips on Dexter’s Origins
Clyde Phillips, showrunner for Dexter: Original Sin, explained the significance of the first kill:
"This is Dexter’s first time acting on what has been tearing at him his entire life. It’s appropriately sloppy. Fans used to adult Dexter’s precision will see a much rougher, less refined approach."
Phillips also revealed how the production team recreated 1991 Miami Metro down to the smallest details:
"It’s the exact same set built from the original plans. Every time I step on set, I have to take a moment to appreciate it."
Christian Slater on His Role as Harry Morgan
Christian Slater reflected on his first day of shooting, which took place in the mangroves of Miami:
"It was my first scene with Patrick [Gibson], and it was a great way to start—father and son on a hunting trip. But it’s a pivotal moment where Harry realizes these trips aren’t enough for Dexter anymore."
Slater also recalled the challenges of filming Harry’s fall and being carried by Gibson:
"Paddy is really strong, but after six or seven takes, we both started to feel it. There were a couple of moments where we just fell over and had to laugh it off."
Alex Shimizu on Becoming Masuka
Alex Shimizu, who portrays a young Vince Masuka, shared his awe at being part of such an iconic series:
"Christian Slater is the coolest guy. Meeting him felt surreal. Walking into these meticulously recreated ’90s sets felt like stepping into a wacky amusement park. As a fan, being in these iconic scenes was so trippy."
Shimizu also expressed gratitude for being part of the 'Dexter universe':
"Trying to stay in character as Masuka while geeking out as a fan was a unique challenge. I feel so lucky to be here."
