Latest From Ask Ausiello - Spoilers About the Season 7 Premiere

Latest from TVLine's Ask Ausiello spoiler column. Hit the jump below to read more spoilers about the season 7 premiere of Dexter...

Question: Have you seen the Season 7 premiere of Dexter? Thoughts? —Jodi
Ausiello: It’s no secret that I found the experience of watching Season 6 akin to undergoing a triple root canal with no Novocaine while listening to the dental hygienist run her finger nails along a blackboard. Well, I’m happy to report that the S7 opener (airing Sept. 30) is so good it almost makes up for the torturous S6. I literally gasped at one point in the episode — and I haven’t done that while watching this show since Dexter found Rita soaking in a blood bath some three years ago. Not much else I can say without outright spoiling what goes down, but here’s a medium-sized tease: There’s a major-ish death.

(If you read our exclusive major spoiler we posted few weeks ago, you know who this character is)

  1. The major-ish death is Angel. The episode is called (A)re you...?

    (A) as in (A)ngel.

    1. I seriously hope you are being sarcastic. That is the most ridiculous argument for a plotline I have ever heard in my life.

  2. Is that Mike Anderson thing a rumor, or is t confirmed?

    1. Nobody has actually confirmed that Mike dies, but the pictures released so far very strongly suggest that it's him.

      Delete
    2. Yes it is him. The spoilers revealed that the Russian mod boss guy gets on the radar of Miami Metro due to a Miami Metro Homicide Detective being murdered by his gang. Also there was a picture posted from the set of season 7 where it showed a white board with crime photos on it and one of the photos was of Mike Anderson and it said victim or something of the sort. Technically, no it hasn't been 100 percent confirmed, but I'd bet my last dollar on it.

  3. I honestly do not understand why people dislike season 6. I thought it was one of the best seasons yet! And this asshole Ausiello is making me angry with his hate of season 6. I want to punch him in the fucking face.

    1. I remember that right after episode 6x09 aired on Showtime for the first time, Ausiello wrote on twitter that he feels so sorry for the show because Gellar twist was an epic fail etc. I wonder why Showtime keeps giving the right to the haters to watch the episodes first. Like with ep. 7.01

      Delete
    2. Agreed; season 6 wasn't the best for me personally but it's not like it was TERRIBLE. The very worst season of this show was still better than the best season of most other shows on TV right now...

      Delete
    3. This Ausiello douche should be fired and not allowed to share his opinions on anything. The Gellar twist might have been predictable, but it was not a fail.

    4. Totally agree. Season 6 was one of the best seasons ever. So far there have only been 5 seasons that were better than season 6.

    What a knobhead.

  5. At least he's being honest. A little extreme, but honest nonetheless. Besides, this raises good hope in the new season.

  6. Did you know that Ausiello is a GLEE FAN?? How does he feels while he's watching this horrible Fox TV Show. He has no right to talk this way about S6.

    1. He's a Glee fan? His opinion is definitely a pile of crap then. He obviously doesn't know what is good and what is "undergoing a triple root canal with no Novocaine while listening to the dental hygienist run her finger nails along a blackboard" on TV.

    2. Ausiello watch and covers the big networks (Fox, abc, nbc, etc) mostly, his website reflects that. Also he is a businessman. He build his business on news and (mostly) positive coverage of TV shows from the big networks.

It's not surprising then that his opinion will be biased and sometimes not really the truth. I'm pretty sure the guy find Glee average at best, but well he has a business to run.

Cable shows are different though. He's less dependant on them, allowing him to be more (bluntly) honest. He's not really a TV critic but he has a right to share his opinion all the same, even if we don't agree, because we're all viewers in the end.

Personally I found season 6 average at best. Debra storyline was the only thing I found interesting. But that's just me. We're allowed to have different opinions.

    3. Cain:

My favorite episode of S6 was "Horse of a Different Color", think that was the 4th episode. Really, it was a nice Dexter episode. Coincidentally it had the "least Travis" I think.

Travis was a character as poorly conceived as Miguel Prado - the difference is that Jimmy Smits can act circles around Colin Hanks.

Smits took sub-par material and made it solid.

Lithgow took a character that could have been a silly disaster, and made it fantastic.

Hanks took on a very difficult character and could not find a way to elevate his performance. It didn't help that the producers and writers had no faith in him.

You often wonder, if some of the issues we ran into towards the end of S6 were the writers and producers realizing "Oh crap, he isn't going to be able to pull this off..." It's almost as if they abandoned that vehicle and got out and pushed it to the end, and meanwhile they put all the good writing into Deb. She was utterly fantastic in the last 3 episodes of the season. I think I've watched every therapy scene at least 50 times.

    4. Yeah you may be right on that. Colin Hanks wasn't abysmally bad but he wasn't quite right for the role I think. And yes the role itself was indeed very weak so he wasn't helped at all. But to be honest I'm also a bit tired of the "mirror' cliched, it's used way too often in TV shows, I get that it is really useful and sometimes necessary storywise and that for the most part it works but it just feels old.

If the writers had switched the roles between Colin Hanks and Edward Olmos it would have been interesting and yet perhaps too similar with Arthur Mitchell... I don't know. I could play at guessing all days but it is what it is. I'm just grateful they choose to explore Debra's character more and open these new possibilities...

And to go back to the original subject it seem it has indeed breathed new life into the show since all the critics are pretty much wildy excited about the new season :)

"Horse of a Different Color" was a good episode, I enjoyed it also. Predictably my favorite episode was the "two- part" finale : Talk to the Hand and This is the Way the World Ends

    5. I personally thought Hanks was stellar in his performance of Travis. He played the yin/yang very well I thought. He played the victim so well and then after the gellar reveal, he turned on a dime. The scene that really sticks out to me, is when he slits that womans throat on The Ricochet Rabbit boat, the look on his face was chilling. I thought season 6 was really good. Was it the best? No. But this assclown Ausiello has NO credibility as a critic. Glee? Really?

      Delete
    6. i agree on the hanks issue. he was chilling in ricochet rabbit. i think he added loads of black humour to the show, it's just that the writers could have done so much more with that character and they didn't. for some reason. but there's season 7 to make up for that lack of effort.

My main reason for loving S6 was because ever since watching the show, i wanted Deb and Dexter to become a couple.

You sir are a twit. Just because you disliked season 6 does not mean everyone has to feel that way. Who the fuc* do you think you are? The ratings for season 6 were the highest overall the show has ever seen, so obviously it is YOU that are in the minority. Fuc*tard.

  8. alright. who the fuck is ausiello? lol seriously, now. i don't give a fuck about his opinion but why be pissed about it? season 6 was no season 1 or 2 or 4 but it most certainly worked as an introduction to what i believe will be an excellent season. it had bright moments, mainly cinematography wise, and some not so dexter quality like as far as writing is concerned. frankly, if a dexter season was definitely not dexter like at all, it was 5. ps to the smartass replying to patrik. i would like to take a dump in your kisser.

  9. Season 6 was an abortion, quite frankly, and yeah, that's 'my opinion', who's else would it be?

Almost the whole thing was filler.

The only things that truly worked in terms of the long term direction of the show was Deb's realisation of her love for Dexter, and the last 2 minutes of the season, which provided not only one of the best kill scenes we've seen, but the platform for the final 2 seasons.

Other than that, it was poorly conceived, poorly written and hugely unnecessary.

    1. Too much hyperbole and exaggeration.

Was it the greatest season of Dexter? Not really.

Was it the worst season of Dexter? Well it is absolutely DEBATABLE whether it was less than or equal to or greater than season 3 or 5. It all has to do with taste.

And really, they were trying to find themselves, Rita's death (and Julie Benz absence from the show) changed the dynamic, not to mention cancer and divorces and changes in showrunners, and actors wanting more money or they won't come back, and losses of writers, and so on.

NOBODY can make perfect art in that kind of situation - and any one of you who thinks they could have done better given those circumstances is kidding themselves, really none of us here have the skill to even write the worst season of Dexter ever.

Constantly bitching about S6 is like walking up to Payton Manning and telling him - "You sucked as a QB in 2008! It was a total abortion of a performance!" it's bullshit, and it's hyperbole given relativity.

  11. I'm glad the critics have ripped into Season 6. They gave the Dexter crew a hard time at the TCA Upfronts as well. I usually hate the smug little shits, but this time they were right.
    The 2nd half of Season 6 was bad by any standards. Episodes 8, 9, 10 & 11 - awful.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Season Six is tied with Season Five as my least favorite season, but I've watched both of them multiple times so I guess they're not that bad.

They both had plenty of good stuff, it's just that they didn't add up to as much as they should have, story-wise, and they both had some mediocre performances (hi Julia!) and some horrible writing here and there (seriously, one really bad line poisons the whole scene, like a turd in a punchbowl).

Maybe now that the end is in sight the writers won't be so chickenshit. I don't know what they're going to do about the tedious expository voiceovers and the occasionally awful dialogue, though. And hopefully they'll start paying a little more attention to stuff like logic and whatever.

And I know this is kind of off-topic, but stuff like Travis magically knowing the layout of Miami Metro (when he's talking to Beth while she's making her Wormwood delivery) or Deb being able to identify Holly's body from behind while Holly's dangling from an anchor (maybe she had a really distinctive spine?) made me want to throw stuff at my TV.

    1. "I could give a fuck, who you fuck. Just don't fuck with my investigation, you fuck!"

One of the worst lines in the history of Dexter. Ruined the entire scene for me.

  13. It is Mike who is dies. The actor signed on for Sons of Anarchy, so he has to drop Dexter. I guess it makes sense since SOA will go on a while longer, but Dexter will be done in 2 years. But really, who watches SOA? I don't know anyone who does, at least they don't talk about it like everyone I know watches and talks about Dexter. Stupid actor guy. Whatever his name is.

  14. @Anonymous August 7, 2012 11:02 PM:

    1) Dexter raised the body out of the water at the end of Ep10. The beginning of Ep11, you see Deb, Mike and Louis standing around at a point that is clearly lower than Holly Bensons body. Deb didn't magically know who she was. She saw the body hanging, looked at the face, and let her brain do its thing to figure out who it was.

    2) Blueprints are public record. Anyone can get their hands on them. In S4, we saw Trinity doing it in the library before killing the man with the hammer. with what Travis wanted to do, and his level of intelligence being safely above average, it's safe to say that he knew he could do and that he did so. There's no need to show how he gained the knowledge because it's assumed that viewers in real life know the information is free, and if not, then they should remember S4 when Trinity did it online.

They don't have time, nor any need, to show us every single detail. The way you're thinking is, "if I didn't see it, it didn't happen", so by that flawed logic, everyone in the show should be naked because we don't see them get dressed and therefore they didn't actually get dressed.

The way you're thinking would fit better with nonsense like Quinn losing so much weight between S4 and S5. They never did explain how he lost so much weight in a matter of minutes! Oh wait, they don't need to. It's a TV show that a year long gap with which the actor must have lost some weight. Deduction. It's your friend.

Perhaps you should pay more attention to reality and logic yourself before you start assuming a lack of attention to logic by the show.

You are wasting your time, these are children.

They don't come up with critical thinking on their own, they are just copying shit that someone else wrote on IMDB and repeating it. No one has an original thought anymore, it's just all little lemmings following the blip on the screen.

How would they know what is good writing or not, when they can't write themselves?

In all my years, I have found that there are two types of people. People who DO and people who cannot do and so they waste their lives criticizing those who can. What are most "so-called" television critics, but failed writers who could never sell a script and make it in the industry?

Writing is a tough business to break into, I know, I have gone from agent to agent shopping my novel, re-written in three times, and re-crafted it. I am also working on a screenplay that's kicking my ass. I hope that one day I can sell this stuff, but meanwhile, you won't catch me sitting around ripping on the writers of Dexter and calling them "shit" when I would be trading my left arm to be in their position, and scared to death that I could never produce that kind of work on such a deadline.

A truly "great" season of a television show just doesn't get spit out, it takes a bit of pain, a bit of magic by everyone involved, and a little luck, and you don't nail it every single time. And then, no matter how good you do, you are subject to the whimsy of "perception" meaning that if someone like this joker Asiello, who's boyfriend just left him for a Dexter actor or producer, get's a mad on, and badmouths the show, and someone else copies the same review (which most of them do) then the whole thing can go south just like that, because most people just "copy and paste".

It happened with the movie Big Lebowski some years ago. A screening had a bad incident, it made a few critics from the AP mad, they wrote some negative reviews, everyone else copied them and "wala" 80% of the critics were saying it was a "bomb" and such a bad movie that it could ruin the CB's careers! 10 years later those same critics have it on their "tops of all time" lists!!!

      Perception, perception, perception...

It's all bullshit, and most people are full of it.

    2. Just because someone doesn't like something does not mean they think they can do a better job. I know for a fact that I could not write anything half as good as season 6 of Dexter, but that doesn't mean the writing was good. Compared to TV shows like Breaking Bad and previous seasons of Dexter, it just feels like they weren't really trying with season 6. The twist was predictable and honestly quite dumb, there were tons of plot holes, the characters acted in stupid and uncharacteristic ways for seemingly no reason. Quite frankly this season was bad, at least compared to previous seasons, and having that opinion of season 6, does not make a person a "sheep", it's their opinion and if they want to be influenced by a reviewer, so be it. I for one however did not enjoy season 6 of Dexter despite the fact that I did not read a single review while I was watching it, and if season 7 doesn't step it up, I might not still be around for season 8.

But that's all I have been reading all over the internet for the past six months. About how they could write Dexter better, and how S6 "sucked" and how they should let the fans write the show.
