Jennifer Carpenter on Dexter Season 7: "I'm Terrified About What Comes Next!"

Last night, at the avant premiere of her new movie, 'Gone', Jennifer Carpenter talked about the next season of Dexter. Hit the jump below to see what she says about Season 7 in her interview on Access Hollywood...

  1. nice, i really like them, i mean Deb and Dex :D

  2. My prediction is that Deb keeps Dexter's secret, and also discovers that LaGuerta one the one that gave the hooker the drugs to frame the Capatain. Deb confronts Laguerta about her theory that she may know who supplied the drugs, and LaGuerta takes out Deb, thus preserving Dexter's secret.

    1. I doubt they're going to kill off Deb. That'd be pretty lame if she died this season, after all that development and the combined hype of Deb finding out who Dexter is and her less-than-platonic feelings towards him.

    2. I agree, because in Episode 8 of season 6, Debra was talking with her therapist about Travis sister and if she knew his secret. Debra said "a good sister would keep the secret." If anyone doesn't believe me, watch the episode again.

    3. well if you've read the books by last season deb is helping Dexter kill so I think that they might go that route.

    4. I think, after the intense moment of discovering Dexter's secret,"something" will happen that causes Deb memory-loss....

    5. No. Doubt it. That idea is pretty bad. Almost as bad as the rumors that Deb is pregnant with Quinn's baby. It will slow down the Season a lot, and there won't be any real development between Deb accepting Dexter, unless it smashed in at the end.

    6. I agree she wants the top of the hill she is on a power trip

    7. I definitely think Deb will keep Dexter's secret...and more than likely kill along with Dexter. I still am unsure about there whole "relationship" as to where that goes.

    8. La Guerta isn't a killer you imbecile. Also the idiot who said they are (meaning dex and deb are related by blood) is 100% false.

      Delete
    9. the remark "a good sister would keep the secret" is right, but deb will only know that dexter killed one man (travis) => she will know about one single murder, nothing about the series of murders and that dexter is a serial killer... she will keep the secret that dexter killed travis, that's all.
"kill along with Dexter" - imo very improbable, just like their 'deeper relationship' (it would be quite retarded script:D)
(and sorry for my lame english;))

    10. Wrong about only one murder, because she was talking with the therapist about her loneliness in childhood, that their father was always only with Dexter, so i think that Dex will share with Deb with "the family's main point" of killing badasses ^^

  3. I love how she gets snippy about the Deb/Dex thing "Come on, it's not biological, they're not blood related!" - in other words, "GET OVER IT!" Hahahaha.

That's exactly how I feel about. Great response.

    1. Well, it's not like she could get into a thesis on why the idea isn't wrong, and besides, they aren't blood related. Maybe we'll finally see some easing of tensions now that both MCH and JC seem to back it 100%.

  5. A particularly loud section of the fanbase has made it seem like most people think Deb/Dex a bad move for the series when, in fact, most people are either indifferent or accepting of it. I just want to see if it leads anywhere worthwhile.

    1. because it IS bad.

    2. No, it's brilliant. And thank god you aren't writing the show.

      Delete
    3. I'd actually like to know why you think it's a bad move; because the counterarguments I usually hear are just moral prudery on a show about a serial killer, which is both idiotic and hypocritical. Also, there have been way worse choices to go romantically--Batista and LaGuerta come to mind--at least Deb's falling in love with Dexter was well-choreographed throughout the season while other couples, such as Deb and Quinn were the real BAD ones. I have no idea what possessed the writers to have Deb practically rape Quinn despite that she watched the man she loved die in front of her maybe a month earlier and her brother's sister-in-law died the night before, when most people were expecting her to either take on a serious role as Harrison's aunt and maybe give up men for one season. It was such a break from Deb's character, but nobody seemed to complain about that. In all honesty, there's no argument people can offer up against it other than 'I'm uncomfortable with two consensual adults, in a deeply Freudian show, to fall in love because they're siblings on paper'; otherwise you'd have bitched just as much about Deb/Quinn, which was even less believable than Angel/Maria.

      Delete
    4. I meant 'her sister-in-law', lol.

      Delete
    5. Anon at 3:37 - I totally concur. The Quinn/Deb thing was by far the WORST move in the history of the show. I thought it was worse than Angel/Maria, and made about as much sense as Dexter falling in love with Maria, I just never got that, but I think the writers did it so that Debra would have a connection while Dexter was off playing kill room with Lumen. I think that if the writers had left Deb alone that season, suffering, while Dexter was getting cozy with another girl, the audience would have started to despise Dexter.

But the mess that created is now self evident. Part of this whole resistance to Deb and Dex now is because the writers messed around with Quinn and Deb last year and sidetracked much of the audience from the Dexter/Deb relationship... so much so that all the short attention spans forgot how intense things were between the two faux siblings.

And short attention spans is the fundamental problem. These people griping about Dex/Deb, so many of them are still going on about how they are half siblings or "could" be half siblings, and yet they turn around and say that they have been "paying attention" to the show and have never seen a love connection between Dex and Deb.

They were paying attention, really? I see... It seems to me most of them pretty much skimmed through season 4, deluded themselves that the entire show Dexter is based on Season 4, and now call themselves "Dexperts" *ugh*

So many opinionated know nothings on the internet, each like 3:26 who's only argument is "I am right because" or "ewwwww". Then there are the chuckleheads who want to "re-write" season 6 and pretend that Deb imagined everything or who really have nothing to say other than "Dexter should be like Breaking Bad" and they say it over and over and over and over.

To the point where I intend never to watch Breaking Bad, and if someone brought it up to me in real life I might end up on the 5:00 news "otherwise mellow dude goes on bloodthirsty rampage" because I am JUST that sick of listening to mindless parrots say that this show should be that show because some random fake internet TV critic on Salon.com suggested it. By the way, the jokers at Salon.com are about as qualified to be show analysts as Sarah Palin is qualified to be ambassador to the middle east.

Saying that Dexter should be written like Breaking Bad, is like saying the Beatles should have been imitating the fucking Beach Boys. Just stop trying to turn apples into oranges people! Go away and enjoy your oranges in silence and leave our apples alone you nitwits. I want to see the Debra and Dexter thing played out, because THAT is the keystone of why I started watching this show to begin with. The chemistry between those two actors/characters are what makes the show really work for me and many other viewers.

      Delete
    6. Dexter isn't Breaking Bad...simple as that. Breaking Bad is the story of a normal, well-adjusted member of society who turns into a monster when all the rules are thrown out the window; Dexter is the opposite, it's about that monster--who has been nurtured into remorselessness throughout his life--becoming human through his connections with others. Rita, Harrison, Deb; all of them are good people (well...Harrison has no choice), and Dexter's the only monster, and they try to lift him to humanity. Walt, on the other hand, is surrounded by despicable people--and becomes worse than all of them through it.

Furthermore, Dexter is a black comedy, BrBa is not. We have a serial killer with a heart-of-gold cop sister who is constantly involved with trying to track him down (though she doesn't know it); everybody in Breaking Bad are totally morally ambiguous. Dexter's heart and soul is Dexter's snark and wit, which would seriously disappear if it were written with the gravity of BrBa.

Making Dexter BB would ruin the credibility of Dexter Morgan, because he ultimately does not deserve his 'just desserts' as all the characters in BrBa seem to. Both shows are fantastic, and, I'll admit, BrBa has been consistently good--so, it's overall better than Dexter, but when Dexter hits its high notes, I really don't think much else compares except maybe The Wire.

Both shows are good as they are, we shouldn't try to make one like the other.

Dexter and Deb have always had a very Odd-Couple sort of relationship. She has boyfriends, but how many of them does she actually seem to care about, especially after S2. Brian offered Deb loads of advice because he was her Dexter-substitute, and Lundy did the same, because he was her Harry-substitute. Deb, on the other hand, couldn't seem to give less of a shit about what Quinn or Anton think about important matters because she always runs to Dexter with her problems. There's an almost psychosexual fixation she has on Dexter that runs in her choice of men and the way the two have acted since the beginning of the series.

Deb is Freudian as hell. Dexter even more so. Let the writers write their Freudian characters rather than your idealized version of them.

      Delete
    7. 3:36 We are in agreement, I have no idealized versions of them, I think both characters are broken - and I loved season 6.

I don't expect happy wings, I just want the little nice bits in between the storms that I've always loved about the series that makes us care so much about the characters. Those little moments like "Slack Tide" and so on, were Deb and Dex can fool themselves for just a little while, into thinking that they can be happy.

I expect the writers will deliver.

The only real issue I ever had with this show was Debra and Quinn, especially Debra jumping on Quinn in her brother's house, where Rita had just been murdered, and after Debra had spent hours mopping up her blood. That was just the most total turn off WTF moment I have ever seen in my life.

It was worse than Dexter shagging the teenage girl at the quickymart.

  6. 8:31 Yea it's that group that squats on the show forum and posts rambling incoherent hatred of anything that doesn't involve a kill room or Dexter having the same plots as Breaking Bad. And then claims that "People don't come here anymore to post because the show is going downhill!"

No no, we don't post there because we hate the constant whining and negativity, theorizing and talking crap about the actors personal lives, flames, and idiotic presentations like "Deb should die!" "Dexter should join the CIA!" "Deb's psychologist is working for Travis and implanting false memories and feelings!"

    *sigh*

But of course they know more than the writers and actors...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's probably why the writers will never listen to them; they come off as children throwing temper tantrums rather than people with legitimate concerns about the direction the show is taking.

I trust that the actors and writers know the material better than I do; I juggle many things and watch Dexter on Sunday nights during the fall, the show is their livelihood. It's just a little funny when people who have no grasp of psychology, philosophy, or the series lore start saying they know it better than the people who've spent the last six years practically living as these characters.

Of course, S6 wasn't the greatest, but it wasn't bad. It finally pulled multiple triggers that people were waiting for, even if the 'Big Bad' storyline suffered quite a bit. Oh well.

On another note, does Jennifer change her voice when she acts? I don't know if it's just me, but her voice sounds a lot prettier than Deb's...

      Delete
    2. Yes she does, Debra has a completely different voice. It is more hard edged and insistent.

Jennifer Carpenter's voice is softer, it even quavers from time to time.

Just another example of how talented she is. Some actors play a different version of themselves - but good actors become somebody else entirely, right down to their voice.

  7. U can see a change between season 5 and 6 season 1 to 5 dexter killed 1 person per episode season 6 he killed 1

    1. Do you really think killing that many people makes any sense? No serial killer is that successful...besides, this season was more about the journey, Dexter's search for spiritual enlightenment. Wouldn't you expect a few less kills?

      Delete
    2. Dexter killed 8 people in season 6.

      2 Ambulance drivers
      1 Wife Killing Jock
      1 Tooth Fairy
      1 Gang Leader
      1 Judas
      1 Nebraskan Pot Farmer
      1 DDK

So not only is anon at 4:19 a little bit whacked. He/she has no idea what's been going on in the show. Typical of the kill crazy complainers.

BTW He only killed 5? 6? In season 5, and most of those were "assists" because Lumen either started the killing, or else put the ball in the net herself.

      Delete
    3. You're forgetting three kills that Dexter made in season 6:

      1. Steve Dorsey
      2. Beth Dorsey
      3. The coyote that Dexter harpooned on the boat in the finale.

I think of Beth as more of a victim of Travis, than Dexter. Dexter just threw her in the interview room to suffocate on the poison gas.

You're still correct in thinking that Dexter has never killed in every episode of a season.

I still wish Jonah would have ended up on that kill list. Jonah would have been the youngest known victim we would have seen Dexter kill. I think it would have been interesting to see Dexter have to deal with that.

    4. The Season 6 Kills:

      1. Ben
      2. Roger
      3. Joe Walker
      4. Julio Benes
      5. Walter Kenney
      6. Nick
      7. Norm
      8. Steve Dorsey
      9. Beth Dorsey
      10. Unknown Coyote
      11. Travis Marshall

      Delete
  8. I didn't count Beth because she was going suicide bomber and would have died anyway.

I missed the first 10 to 15 minutes of Episode 11 and 12 so I never saw the Steve kill, nor saw it later. I remember the coyote from the previews though, oops!

In any case, we are talking 10 or 11 - is that the most in a season?

Hmmm, Dex has to be around 75+ now, sheesh... I think 99 would be perfect, it's just so ominous. lol

    ReplyDelete
  9. I think he's over a hundred.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Perhaps Nicholas can give us an accurate count... We can assume "Bay Harbor" was not the first dumping sight, because they never found First Nurse or the drug dealer that Harry saw him cutting up.

But I think Lundy said 39 bodies? So that + 35 = 74 by my count... and I know I am missing some.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. We're forgetting all the kills he performed before Season 1. He has killed a lot of people, and he doesn't get caught because there is never a body or a crime scene. More times than not he kills people whom are dirty/evil, and therefore nobody searches for them.

His flaw is that he kills to get his blood pumping, and he believes it makes him feel 'something'. It's become important to him because he's a sociopath. He doesn't realize the inevitability of getting caught. That's not to mention his ever constant hallucinations of Harry and his murdered brother helping him deduce life altering decisions.

Now toss in his sister - Yea this next season is going to be incredible. S6 was a bit fast, but I liked it, because the next couple seasons will be like a part 2 & 3. I'm sure this next season is going to be Dexter's slow slide down the razor blade to hell - I've been waiting for this day. *Rubs hands together with an evil grin*

    1. It was proven that they weren't in S1. Dexter takes a blood test with Joe Driscoll and it's a match--no way Harry could be Dex's father. Besides, wasn't the point of Brian's rampage to prove to Dexter that nature is worth more than nurture? Dexter admits Deb isn't his sister, and never could be a sibling like Brian could...so, no. There'd be no way Dexter and Deb are biologically related.

  13. Dexter and BrBa are both excellent shows. Why would anyone suggest that they should somehow be more similar? This is what we've been leading up to for six seasons. Dexter will have someone who loves him AND knows his secret. We were close with Rita, closer still with Lumen, but with Deb it will be complete love and complete knowledge. How that unfolds is going to be interesting, for both Deb and Dexter.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Because they have similar premises: Violent serial killer poses as a mild-mannered Forensic Tech; Rising meth kingpin poses as a mild-mannered Chemistry Teacher. I don't think they should be similar. Walt is all gravity and suspense that can only come from someone who has been ingrained into society; Dexter is filled with wit and wry observations that can only come from an outsider looking in. BrBa is a more suspenseful, more gravitas-led sort of show; Dexter is a more witty, clever show.

However it shakes out, most people do seem to be on the case of this whole Dex/Deb thing without properly understanding the context of it all. Debra has been infatuated with Dexter for quite some time; she convinces him time and time again that he is good, and she's what's wrong with her world, despite that she had every right to hate Dexter: He took Harry away from her. Dexter admits, also, in the first episode, that if he could have feelings for anyone, it'd be Deb. Now, if Dexter has evolved so much that he was able to transform from feeling that Rita is 'the perfect beard' to genuinely loving her, don't you think his feelings for the one person he said he could possibly have feelings for would intensify along with that? Deb's blatant hero worship of Dexter since the S1 finale was bound to shake out this way, and they've put it off too long, imo--wasted the fifth season with Dex/Lumen and Deb/Quinn despite that those two relationships were better off staying platonic rather than developing Dexter and Debra's family dynamic.

But, with S7 comes the possibility of some form of redemption for Dexter through Deb.

    2. I've been browsing through these comments and FINALLY someone hits it right on the nob!! When you mentioned in the first episode of season 1 Dexter admitting that if he could have feelings for anyone...it'd be Deb, I knew you and I were on the same page. Everything you stated I absolutely agree with. It'll just be interesting as to were the writers will take it.

  14. I think it will be years before I can enjoy BrBa again thanks to a certain contingent of fans who like to praise their show and rip on Dexter. They are worse than Bible Thumpers screaming "Your religion/believe sucks, you are stupid and are going to hell, what you believe is crap... oh, by the way, come visit our church!"

After that you don't care if their church levitates you into heaven, you just want to stay the hell away from them.

  15. We all know that in season 6 deb was starting to wonder is she had REAL feelings for dexter.so I predict that she keeps the secret and then some funky incest love will occur.

    ReplyDelete
  16. OMG.....blood related or not...they grew up brother and sister! It's just stupid. No reason what so ever for the writers to go there. Let the seriel killing be the top story here. These actors have done such an amazing job of creating these characters whom we love......do the writers really need to screw that up?
PS Please give us a longer season....3 Mos of Dexter is not enough :-)

    1. Serial Killing would still be the top story. In all shows, there's usually and A, B, C, and D strand of storytelling. In the first four seasons of the show, the A strand is Miami Metro's investigation; the B strand is Dexter's own investigation, the C strand was Dexter and Rita (as well as Astor and Cody), and the D strand (since it's usually comedic) is anything and everything that came out of Masuka's mouth. Dexter and Debra have had all sorts of unconscious, Freudian behavior towards each other, and once Rita died, this HAD to be coming. It's not screwing up the characters if the writers left us evidence that Deb DOES love Dexter in a 'more-than-brotherly' way; it's character development. And if Dexter returns her affections, which evidence suggests he most probably will should they choose this storyline, it is STILL character development because there's evidence from the sixth episode of the first season onwards that he cares far more for Debra than anyone else in his life (even outshining Rita). Now, if they were to get rid of the plotline because some people didn't like it, wouldn't that be screwing up the characters? Wouldn't the fact that people sniff in disdain because they grew up brother and sister be a cause for character regression, rather than development?

      Think about it.

    2. 1:08 - Sorry, honey, but YOU'RE just stupid... This is exactly the typical "I got no arguments against it but I'm just offended since the normal world IS just like Disney, right?" attitude I start to be allergic at...

  18. Deb/Dex couldn't happen, because the series is American. Bigtime American producers don't risk putting in controversial stuff. The networks would be way too scared to loose viewers or be judged over religiously frownable matters.

It's hypocracy, but hey... That's how it works!

So Dex and Deb will probably dance around, without Dex knowing about it and then Deb will be killed or something, just to make a statement that she cannot look upon her brother like that. Blood or no blood.

I think that laguerta plays a good "Evil Bitch" role, but at the same time I have yet to see her get her fair share of justice, she seems to think she can get away with anything, and have no consequences in the end. I'm thinking that because Deb found out Dexter's true nature, this could be used as a good way for Deb and Laguerta to go head to head. I'm not sure how dexter would feel about it, but I know that Deb would never in a million years, stand the thought of Laguerta flirting with Dexter, much less the reality.

The psychology , the mind , the vibe that you get into gets like American Psycho when it came out as a portrait of the Ultimate power that can be embodied and represented is a killer and the killer is shown piece by piece and moment by moment for the idealist to take that protrait to then channel that power in the individuals own direction; and here the cfreation of Dexter dishes out that same Ideal to People against it; where they can take that power and channel it aaording to their own ideals and that is the same reason a leak in information is dangerous; it is dangerous because it portrays power that can be taken by anyone

  29. I love this show and can't wait for the next season. I also think Dexter has remained consistently amazing throughout the whole series and I don't see why there's been so many complaints recently, a lot of them are drawn towards the fact that Dexter broke a lot of his own rules, watch over season 6 again, when he drops the blood plates he says something along the lines of "nothing is in order anymore" he becomes so focused on killing DDK, it doesn't matter to him what he does to achieve it. The other complaint is Debra falling "in love" with Dexter, I don't think this is stupid, it's perfectly understandable that she could develop those feelings towards her non-biological brother after all the years he's been there for her, just because she has those feelings doesn't mean she's going to act on them, which admittedly would be kind of creepy, everyone's deepest, strangest secrets, thoughts and feelings can come out in therapy.
