There was a time, not so long ago, when Showtime and Paramount+ were considering expanding the Dexter franchise with multiple TV shows, including both prequels and sequels featuring characters from the original series. Among those was a prequel centered on the Trinity Killer.
However, following last year's developments, including Skydance's acquisition of Paramount and the subsequent cancellation of Original Sin, it became obvious that the Trinity Killer prequel was unlikely to move forward. The project, which would explore the early life of Arthur Mitchell, already had a fully written 10-episode first season.
Now, Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips has revealed that a beloved character from the OG series was actually set to be in the prequel, establishing a rivalry with a younger Arthur Mitchell: Special Agent Frank Lundy, originally portrayed by Keith Carradine.
A Younger Frank Lundy Was Set to Appear in the Trinity Killer Prequel
During the celebrations marking the Dexter franchise's 20th anniversary in New York City, Clyde Phillips spoke to Deadline about the project's uncertain future, noting that John Lithgow was also expected to feature as the series' narrator.
Phillips confirmed that the team had completed all 10 scripts and was very happy with the results. He also revealed something that was never announced before, that the planned series would have introduced a younger version of Lundy long before his return in Dexter Season 4, where his pursuit of Mitchell ultimately ended in his death at the hands of Trinity's secret daughter, Christine Hill.

The Prequel Could Have Also Explored Lundy's Hunt for Trinity
With the prequel set decades earlier, it is definitely easy to imagine a younger Lundy tracking Arthur Mitchell's ritualistic murder cycles across the United States.
The series could have explored how Lundy connected the seemingly unrelated cases and eventually coined the name "Trinity Killer."
Seeing the early stages of that investigation unfold on screen would have added something deeper to one of the original Dexter show's most beloved storylines, and would offer fans a chance to see how Lundy's pursuit of Mitchell began long before Dexter Morgan entered the picture.
Is the Trinity Killer Prequel Still Happening?
Addressing recent online speculation, Phillips actually acknowledged that the subject keeps resurfacing among fans. However, he personally does not believe the series will move forward, adding that any rumors suggesting a possible revival are news to him as well.
For now, the Trinity Killer prequel appears unlikely to move beyond the scripts that have already been written. It would have been fascinating to see which actors were chosen to play young Arthur Mitchell and young Frank Lundy, but judging by Phillips' latest comments, the chances of seeing that story on screen sadly seem extremely low.
