These five characters are still alive, but sadly, it seems highly unlikely that they will return in the second season of Dexter: Resurrection.

Over the past few months, and ever since filming for Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 began, we have received some interesting casting news regarding both new and returning characters for the upcoming season. But even though we now know the identities of some characters joining the story, that doesn't really mean there won't be a few surprises along the way.
Fans can definitely expect more returns from the OG series as well as Dexter: New Blood. However, there are also a few characters from previous installments who, despite still being alive and technically being able to appear in Season 2, don't seem very likely to return.
In some cases, there is even evidence suggesting that their stories have actually moved on, making a comeback to Dexter: Resurrection unlikely, at least for now.
Without further ado, let's take a look at five characters from previous Dexter seasons who are still alive but don't appear likely to return in the second season.
1. Angela Bishop (played by Julia Jones)
The first one is none other than former Iron Lake P.D. deputy chief Angela Bishop.
Introduced from the very beginning of the 2021 miniseries Dexter: New Blood, Angela's relationship with our favorite antihero started out as a romance but eventually ended in disaster. Dexter was caught, managed to escape, and was ultimately nearly killed by Harrison. Angela then helped Harrison get away with murder and, according to Dexter: Resurrection's series premiere, took the blame for shooting Dexter before fleeing Iron Lake.
To this day, her whereabouts remain unknown.
Angela's story was wrapped up fairly quickly, allowing the series to move forward without her, and that is exactly what happened. Because of that, it seems extremely unlikely that Julia Jones will be reprising her role anytime soon.
2. Tom Matthews (played by Geoff Pierson)
One of the most theorized characters from the OG series has always been Tom Matthews, the former deputy chief of Miami Metro.
For years, many fans have believed that Matthews could know the truth about Dexter Morgan being the Bay Harbor Butcher. That has actually remained one of the biggest reasons fans have hoped to see him return to the franchise.
And while a comeback would definitely be interesting, it is difficult to see how it would fit into Season 2. The next chapter already has a lot going on, and even though Angel Batista is dead, the time jump could mean that there isn't a strong enough reason for Matthews to return, especially now that Quinn is set to become the primary figure "representing" Miami Metro.
3. Audrey Bishop (played by Johnny Sequoyah)
Much like Angela, another character who appears highly unlikely to return in Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 is Audrey Bishop, Angela's daughter and Harrison's former girlfriend.
After Harrison left Iron Lake, his relationship with Audrey became a thing of the past. What's even more telling is that the first season of Resurrection didn't even mention her.
With the story having completely moved beyond Iron Lake, it is actually difficult to see where Audrey would fit into the current narrative, making a return from Johnny Sequoyah very unlikely for now.
4. Cody Bennett (played by Preston Bailey)
What (some) fans tend to forget is that Harrison actually has a half-brother who he hasn't been in contact with for more than a decade.
We're talking about Cody Bennett, Rita's son, whose last appearance on Dexter came all the way back in 2012, during Season 7's “Argentina” episode. Since then, Cody has only been mentioned in passing, but we haven't seen him on screen again. And according to a recent interview with Clyde Phillips, that appears to be intentional.
While Cody is still alive and could technically return, the current story doesn't seem to be heading in that direction.
5. Astor Bennett (played by Christina Robinson)
Last but not least, we have Harrison's sister Astor, who, just like Cody, last appeared in Dexter during Season 7.
As Harrison's older halfsister, Astor has always been a character who could potentially return to the franchise, especially considering that although in a small degree, she was still part of his life in Season 4 and briefly in Season 5. However, the writers chose not to bring her back in Season 8, and she has remained absent ever since.
With Clyde Phillips indicating that there isn't a good reason for Rita and Paul's children to return to Dexter: Resurrection, it seems that, for now, the door is closed on Astor as well.
So, there we have it.
These are five characters that some fans might expect to see return, especially since all of them are still alive. But, based on what has happened to their respective stories, as well as what has been said by the people behind Dexter: Resurrection, a comeback doesn't appear to be in the cards for Season 2.
Of course, that doesn't mean the door is permanently closed. Dexter has surprised fans many times before, and with the franchise celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, there could still be a few unexpected reveals waiting for us.
For now, though, these five characters appear to be staying away from Dexter: Resurrection.
